Suzanne Swinyer, primary resource teacher at Cozine Elementary School, believes her school's recognition of National Inclusive Schools Week, held annually in December, helped students and staff believe in the culture of inclusive education.
"We invited a wheelchair basketball team to play a game with us, we held many multicultural events, we played respect bingo over the loud speaker, we held student morale-builders during lunchtime, we invited local blind leaders to bring their guide dogs to the school and talk with the students, and we conducted book studies with our staff to further their understanding of diverse learning styles," Swinyer said.
Cozine received the 2006-07 Platinum Inspiration Award from the Nevada Partnership for Inclusive Education. The $25,000 award recognizes the school's commitment to meeting the diverse needs of students.
Nevada PIE recognized Swinyer as Educator of the Month in July.
