There in a time of need
Volunteers lend hand when tragedy strikes

By MARK SMITH
VIEW STAFF WRITER

At the scene of almost any tragedy -- a fatal car wreck, a suicide, a murder -- many of the usual emergency responders make an appearance.

Police, the coroner, EMTs and paramedics, firefighters and doctors may answer a 911 call. Also likely to show up are unpaid volunteers who, time and again, do one thing: offer help to those who most need it in the wake of a tragedy and who often would otherwise be left alone and unaided.

When John Stuart has his star dedicated on the Las Vegas Walk of Stars on May 30, part of the award will read: "father of the celebrity impersonation industry."

The creator of the "Legends in Concert" celebrity impersonation show empire could be called a legend in his own right, although he is modest about the whole thing.

It's an honor Todd and Shawn Radwanski prefer hadn't been bestowed on their daughter. She was the poster child for the Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer of Southern Nevada's recent 5K Fun Run/Walk, held April 29 at Mountain's Edge Master Planned Community near Blue Diamond Road and Buffalo Drive.

Adilyn Radwanski was diagnosed with retinoblastoma when she was 8 months old. The first indication was that she had a wandering eye.

Thompson sisters take Fighting Irish team to new highs

By KEVIN STOTT
VIEW STAFF WRITER

Usually perceived as a football school, the University of Notre Dame is suddenly being recognized as a power in the sport of women's tennis, thanks in great part to a talented pair of twins, Catrina and Christian Thompson, who graduated from Bishop Gorman High School.

If form holds, the Fighting Irish's dynamic duo will be right in the thick of it, trying to help the Fighting Irish make some noise at the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championships being held this week at the Taube Tennis Center at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif.

Coronado Cougars shut out rivals to end season undefeated

By KEVIN STOTT

Combining the three most important elements to having success in the sport -- good pitching, hitting and defense -- the Coronado High School junior varsity baseball team wrapped up a very memorable unbeaten season by shutting out Silverado, 11-0, in its final game on May 4.

The Cougars, coached by Adam Maxwell, finished 19-0-2 overall and a perfect 10-0-1 in Sunrise Region Southeast Division play, quite a feat considering Coronado plays in the same division with two of the toughest programs in Sin City in Green Valley and Silverado.
