View welcomes announcements of recent achievements of Favorite Sons & Daughters who have graduated from local high schools. Achievements may run the gamut from earning a college degree to successfully climbing Mount Everest. Rachael Thompson, 12, has been selected to represent the state of Nevada at the 2006 Junior National Student Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C. The seminar is scheduled for June 20-25.
Rachael is a seventh-grade honor student at Faith Lutheran Junior/Senior High School, and will join a select group of recognized middle-school leaders from across the nation to discuss issues that affect our communities, nation and world.
Rachael also received an award for academic excellence in English this school year and was inducted into the Junior National Honor Society with a 4.0 grade point average.
In her free time, Rachael likes to play the saxophone and piano, read, swim, and she enjoys spending time with friends and family.
Rachael is the daughter of Tommy and Kelly Thompson of Las Vegas.
Heather Huett, a senior at Cimarron-Memorial High School, has been named the Summerlin Lions Club Student of the Month for April.
Huett has maintained a 3.8 GPA for all four years of high school and a 4.0 GPA during her senior year.
She received an academic letter for this year and last, is on the track team, runs cross-country, played varsity volleyball her sophomore and junior years, loves to sing, and hopes to attend college in the fall to work toward a degree in mechanical engineering.
Her long-term goal is to turn her love of cars into a job at Ford Motor Company in concept car applications.
Heather is the daughter of Michele and Scott Davis and the sister of Noah, all of Las Vegas.
Addison Bogardus, 13, a seventh-grader at the Academy of Science and Mathematics at Hyde Park Middle School, has been named fencing's Overall Vegas Cup Champion in Youth 14 men's foil.
Addison began fencing in 2003 and has won the Vegas Cup for the past three years in his age group.
He also qualified for and participated in the 2005 Summer Nationals Championships.
Addison's other interests include video games and geology.
He is the son of Bill and Michelle Bogardus of Henderson.
Luncheon honorees spread Goodwill
One of my leadership team members shared the article "Thrift store's mark celebrated at event," North Las Vegas View, May 2, with me recently regarding Goodwill's 2006 Community Recognition Luncheon.
Thank you for the wonderful article, especially the details reported of the events that took place at our luncheon. Goodwill of Southern Nevada is very proud of our award winners, so it was great to see them recognized in your article.
