The Nevada State Division of Museums and History celebrates this year's International Museums Day theme of "Museum's and Young People" by providing free admission to all state museums on Thursday.
In Las Vegas, the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society will offer free admission. It is located at 700 Twin Lakes Drive, inside Lorenzi Park.
Currently on display is The 24 Hour Show: Working 'round the Clock in Las Vegas. This exhibit celebrates the lives of casino workers in Las Vegas and is based on over 50 interviews with casino and related industry employees.
In addition, the museum is now featuring the exhibit Spinning the Magic: The Las Vegas News Bureau Story with photographs of entertainers, celebrities, models and News Bureau photographers.
For a limited time, the traveling exhibit Sarah Winnemucca, which features a small bronze replica of the official statue, is on display.
In addition to the changing exhibits, the museum features 13-foot-high Colombian Mammoth, a 25-foot-long Ichthyosaur, Bugsy Siegel's hotel room and a research library that houses a collection of historic southern Nevada newspapers. For more information, call 486-5205.
Archaelogical programs planned
Nevada Archaeological Awareness and Historic Preservation Month programs are planned for the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society, 700 Twin Lakes Drive in Lorenzi Park. A session titled Petroglyphs of Nevada is slated for 7 p.m. Monday. It will feature Dr. Alanah Woody, executive director of the Nevada Rock Art Foundation, who will discuss the importance of preserving and protecting ancient rock art sites, including unique areas like Sloan Canyon.
Growing up in Classic Las Vegas: An Evening of Reminiscences of Las Vegas "Old Timers," is planned for 7 p.m. May 23 with Lynn Zook as moderator. Zook is the author of "As We Knew It: Classic Las Vegas Archive." Long-time Las Vegans Ed Von Tobel, George Foley Sr., Gail and Donna Andress, Mary Cashman and Virginia Beckley Richardson will take part in the discussion.
A Virtual Tour of St. Thomas is the third program, scheduled for 7 p.m. May 24. Archaeologists Eva Jensen and Steve Daron will host a virtual tour of the once submerged town and see the work being done at Lake Mead by the Park Service.

'The Incredibles' showing at Becker
The city of Las Vegas plans "The Incredibles" for its Free Movie in the Park at 9:30 p.m May 26 at Becker Community School, 9110 Hillpointe Road.

Rainbow Company to present 'Mermaid'
The Rainbow Company, an acclaimed youth theater group, announces 11 June performances of "The Little Mermaid" at the Charleston Heights Arts Center Theater, 800 S. Brush St.
Audiences have the choice of seven performances: 7 p.m. shows are available on June 2, 3, 8, 9 and 10; 2 p.m. matinees are offered on June 4, 10 and 11. This is the original classic version of the Hans Christian Andersen tale. Tickets are $3 for children, teens and seniors are $5 and adults are $7.

Bellagio gallery exhibits Ansel Adams
The Bellagio Gallery of Fine Art, 3600 Las Vegas Blvd. South, announces its newest exhibition, Ansel Adams: America.
The exhibition features nearly 50 masterworks the American photography figure, including works based on a selection personally chosen by Adams before his death. The works trace four decades of Adams' experimentation with black and white photography.

Super Summer Theatre announces shows
Super Summer Theatre announces its 31st annual lineup of shows under the stars. The series is presented in the mountain setting of Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.
"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," is scheduled to open June 14. "Return to the Forbidden Planet" is planned for July with "Bells Are Ringing" in August and "Noises Off" slated for September.

Outstanding teacher nominations sought
R.H. Donnelley, publisher of the Sprint Yellow Pages, announces the Recycle for Teachers program is returning to Las Vegas June 15 through July 31. Nominations for outstanding area teachers are being accepted until Friday. Visit www.rhdforteachers.com to nominate a favorite teacher.
Five finalists will be randomly selected from the nominees to host recycling drives at their schools. As a reward for their efforts, RHD will donate a total of $11,000 in grants to be divided among the five teachers, with $3,000 being awarded to the teacher whose school collects the most directories and $2,000 being awarded to each of the other four teachers.

Fifth-grader wins holiday poster contest
Savannah Sturm, a fifth-grade student at The Meadows School, won the state's 2006 Arbor Day National Poster Contest. She was presented with $50 from the Nevada Shade Tree Council, as well as a certificate, T-shirt and book during an award ceremony at her school.
Savannah designed her winning poster around the contest theme, "Trees Are Terrific... in All Shapes and Sizes." Savannah's poster continues on to the national competition sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation and Toyota Motor North America, Inc.
Two regional winners were also recognized in the Nevada contest: Sierra Swope of Mountain View Christian Schools and Shelby Gallagher of Gardnerville Elementary in Gardnerville.

Bloomingdale's sale to benefit NBT
Nevada Ballet Theatre will benefit from sales made Wednesday at the Bloomingdale's Home Store at the Fashion Show mall, 3200 Las Vegas Blvd. South.
Beginning at noon, Bloomingdale's will donate 10 percent of net purchases to Nevada Ballet Theatre. Guests can shop for a cause until 9 p.m. Receipts must be presented to the Nevada Ballet Theatre table inside the store.
The 10th annual Woodsy Owl Day event is planned for 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park.
Woodsy Owl Day offers a full day of fun and entertainment for children, families and the young at heart. Live events include a tree-planting ceremony honoring Arbor Day, a patriotic NJROTC presentation, arts and crafts, free wagon rides, a chance to climb aboard the Forest Service fire engine and kite flying with Boy Scout Troop 64. The event is free.
Guests will have the chance to meet and greet with characters including host of the day Woodsy Owl, McGruff the Crime Dog, Mohave Max, Las Vegas Speedway's mascot Nascar, a Las Vegas Gladiator, the Las Vegas '51s mascot and Sonio's friendly chicken.
Refreshments will be for sale and families are encouraged to bring their own picnic baskets.

MS information fair slated for Rio
The Nina Davenport MS Symposium and Information Fair is slated for 9 a.m.to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Rio Pavilion Convention Center. The symposium, hosted by the Nevada Neuroscience Foundation, honors Davenport, who started the program six years ago. Her goal was to reach out to the local MS community and provide patients with quality educational programming and information.
Davenport is retired from the MS Society where she worked for six years. She was a volunteer in the community prior to that despite being diagnosed with MS 16 years ago.
The first year the event had about 120 attendees and 20 vendors. This year it is expected to have more than 500 people and 40 vendors. The keynote speaker is Elliot Frohman, director of the Multiple Sclerosis Program & Multiple Sclerosis Clinical Center at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
West Virginia University alumni are invited to attend the inaugural meeting of the Southern Nevada Chapter of the WVU Alumni Association. All area alumni, friends and supporters of WVU are welcome and encouraged to attend.
The meeting will take place 6:30 p.m. today at Las Vegas Events, 770 E. Warm Springs Road, #140. The purpose of the meeting is to elect officers, form a steering committee, create a basic chapter constitution, determine goals for the chapter and plan a July membership drive.
