'Xtreme Magic' performer houses 13 big cats in his backyard compound

A new chapter
Facility employees stock bookshelves for opening day

For the first time in about four decades, a new library is opening in North Las Vegas.
At 2400 Deer Springs Way, the Aliante Library is the new jewel in the North Las Vegas Library District's tiara. It replaces the old 4528 W. Craig Road branch, which recently closed and contributed its stock of roughly 20,000 volumes to the new site, said district director Anita Laruy.

County appoints two local residents to committee
Desert Conservation Program regroups, adds members

On May 2, the Clark County Commission named two more Boulder City residents to the newly reconstituted 28-member Desert Conservation Program Advisory Committee -- Dr. Tom O'Farrell, a zoologist and private environmental consultant, and Julene Haworth, government affairs specialist for the Southern Nevada Home Builders Association.
As two of the 12 appointed members, they will join city conservation specialist Steve Koon, who automatically serves as one of the 16 ex-officio federal, state and local representatives who will help to administer the Desert Conservation Program (DCP).

But despite being knee-deep in the field, when the part-time Las Vegas resident saw the movie "Casino," he had no idea that the parts played by Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Sharon Stone were based on real organized crime characters who plagued Las Vegas during the 1970s and early 1980s.
