Junior Giants seek players, coaches

The Las Vegas Junior Giants is holding sign-ups through early June for players, ages, 4-14 and coaches from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St.

BASKETBALL

Hoops program to be held at church

Bishop Gorman High School girls basketball coach Sheryl Krmpotich will be holding a basketball camp for boys and girls ages 4-18 at Christ the King Church, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive.

The camp is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. on June 8-9 and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on June 10. The cost is $75 for early registrants and $85 at the door.

Blazer camp to tip off in June

The 14th annual Blazer Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 8-16 will hold two sessions at Durango's gym, 7100 W. Dewey Drive.

The first session lasts from June 12-15, with the second session held from June 19-22. Both will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost of the camp, run by Durango High School boys varsity coach Al La Rocque, is $125.

Participants will receive a T-shirt, a photo package, a personal evaluation and a Nike basketball, as well as guidance from the Durango basketball staff, camp counselors and players.

Church to offer summer camp

Christ the King, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, is offering a summer basketball camp from June 26-28 for grades 4-9.

Durango High School girls varsity coach John Bartleson will run the program. The cost per camper is $85 if payment is postmarked before May 19, and $100 for registrants after that date.

Academy to offer recreational league

Participants can register between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. at the Tarkanian Basketball Academy for its recreational league.

The cost is $560 per team and includes eight regulation games, entry into the league championship playoffs, trophies for all division winners and all referee/scorekeeper fees.

Games will be played on Friday and Saturday evenings until June 17 at the Station's Sports Complex.

The number of teams is limited and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Academics, sports academy under way

Boys and girls ages 7 to 15 of all skill levels can participate in the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA's Academy of Academics and Sports.

Headed by former UNLV, NBA and WNBA players, the academy focuses on basketball fundamentals, advanced game execution and academic success. Players can access a computer learning center. Homework assistance will be provided.

The program is offered from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The cost is $79 per month, per player. Participants receive $25 off the first month when they donate a new basketball to the academy. YMCA plans Itty Bitty Basketball sign-ups

The Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, invites pee wee players ages 3-5 years to learn basketball basics through a fundamental skill-building program.

Broadus receives Congress tribute

Longtime Las Vegas boxing trainer Charles "Doc" Broadus Day received a tribute on the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives on March 29.

Day was the original trainer of George Foreman.

"Congressman Jon Porter introduced the tribute and spoke of Doc's many accomplishments throughout his life," said Johnny "Bang-Bang" Jackson, director of Doc Broadus Sports & Entertainment.

An evening to honor the longtime boxing coach, who is now 87 years old, was held last Sept. 17 at Memphis Barbecue Grill in Las Vegas.

CAMPS

YMCA offers 70 summer camps

The Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, and the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, will offer 70 specialty camps from June 12 to Aug. 25 for youth ages 5 to 17. Registration can be conducted at both branches. Prices vary based on the camp. Choices include sports, travel, theatre, cooking, crafts and teen camps.

CYCLING

Tour de Cure gears up to raise funds

The Tour de Cure, a national event held annually to raise money for diabetes, will be held Saturday morning, starting at Henderson's Discovery Park, 2011 Paseo Verde Parkway.

Three routes have been established for riders: the 100K (Check-in: 6:30 a.m., start: 7 a.m.); the 50K (Check-in: 7:30 a.m., start: 8 a.m.); and the 25K (Check-in: 8 a.m., start: 8:30 a.m.) The 100K route will be near Hoover Dam, while the 50K and 25K rides will go through mostly residential areas.

Top teams from 2005 included Team CES (Communication Electronic Systems), Team Levi and Haiku Peloton. The top individuals were Frank Ellis, Jerry McNeish and Larry Howard. Classes to help participants look good

GOLF

Golf Club set to host 3A championship

The 2006 Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association Class 3A Nevada State High School Boys Golf championship tournament is set for Monday and Tuesday at Mountain Falls Golf Club, 5001 Fox Ave., Pahrump.

The first tee time on Monday is slated for 11 a.m., while on Tuesday, play begins at 9 a.m.

Mountain Falls, an 18-hole, 7,082-yard parkland course, is the centerpiece of Mountain Falls, a master-planned community 45 miles west of Interstate 15. Spectators are invited to follow the players; a spectator waiver and guidelines will be provided on the first tee. Steiner's tourney to include $10K contest

Steiner's is hosting its 14th annual golf tournament on Friday at the Paiute Golf Resort, 10325 Nu Wav Kaiv Blvd.

The $135 admission cost includes unlimited beverages on the course and an all-you-can-eat-and-drink event at the awards ceremony following the tourney at Steiner's, 1750 N. Buffalo Drive. There also will be a $10,000 hole-in-one contest.

Police-Firefighters Tournament on tap

The fourth annual Police Versus Firefighters Charity Golf Tournament will be held May 25 at the Highland Falls Golf Club, 10201 Sun City Blvd.

Check-in is at 7 a.m., with tee-off set for 8 a.m. The cost is $120 per player or $480 per foursome.

There will be hole-in-one prizes, a longest drive and closest-to-the-pin contest, a raffle and other awards. The entry fee includes greens fees, golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch and a tournament hat.

Registration will be held the day of the event if openings are available. All proceeds will benefit the Southern Nevada Police Athletic League and the UMC Burn Center.

Alzheimer's event to tee off on June 3

The second annual Alzheimer's Memorial Golf Tournament is set for June 3 at the Aliante Golf Club, 3100 W. Elkhorn Drive in North Las Vegas. The sign-up deadline is May 20.

The cost is $75 per person and includes greens fees, cart, range balls and lunch. There also will be raffle prizes, a putting contest, a closest-to-the-pin contest, a longest drive contest and a giant team skins game.

The tourney begins at 7 a.m., with check-in beginning at 5:30 a.m. The tournament will have a shotgun start and will be played in the four-person scramble format.

LACROSSE

League to sponsor free clinic in June

The Las Vegas Lacrosse League is sponsoring a free lacrosse clinic for boys and girls in grades 3-8.

The two-day clinic, scheduled for June 2-3 at Oxford Park in Summerlin, is intended for children who have never played the sport.

The clinic begins at 4 p.m. June 2, with registration with the first-day skills session running from 5 to 7 p.m. The clinic concludes June 3, with the second skills session running from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a watermelon break and an exhibition game.

No pads are required or will be allowed and there will be no contact in the camp.

Participants should bring their own stick, be prepared to borrow one or purchase an entry-level stick and ball at the clinic for $30. Those interested in reserving a stick for the clinic should call 845-5473.

Instruction will be given on the basics -- throwing, catching, scooping, dodging and the rules. A parental consent form will be required before participation.

Card dealer wins WPT World Championship

Former Las Vegas card dealer Joe Bartholdi, 26, won the WPT World Championship on April 22 at the Bellagio, beating out 604 other competitors for the $3.76 million first prize.

Bartholdi's previous highest win came last year, when he finished fifth at the buy-in event of the World Series of Poker, bringing home $71,445.

SOCCER

Basics course kicks off at Durango Hills YMCA

Soccer 101, an introductory course for boys and girls ages 6-15, will be held on Thursday from 5 to 6 p.m. until June 8 at the Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive.

Soccer class participants can sign up for one class at a time or the six-week session.

The cost for the course is $10 per class or $55 for the six-week course.

Aleman heads to Arizona State

Cimarron-Memorial High School's Randel Aleman, a four-time state champion who became the 22nd prep grappler in the Silver State to accomplish that feat, has signed a letter of intent to attend Arizona State University.

The Spartans senior helped co-coaches Tim Jeffries and Mike Garcia and Cimarron capture a fourth straight title last winter.
