Workshop attendees worry about fate of property on corridor

By MARK SMITH

Two more workshops of a series of four will allow residents and business representatives who work within a quarter-mile of North 5th Street to submit their suggestions to designers about improvements planned along that corridor.

But if the first workshop is any indicator, it seems planners have their work cut out for them as far as persuading residents of the project's worth.

Big brown eyes and boyish charm. Those qualities are getting Joshua Lopez, 5, of Summerlin noticed by big ad campaign companies and movie casting offices. He's been in the business less than two years but already has an impressive resume.

His first job was in an independent film called "Double Down." It was shown at the 2006 Sundance Film Festival. He's also been on an episode of the TV show "Charmed," which aired Oct. 19 on the WB network.

Couple forming Project Mosaic to help young artists

By ANGIE PARKINSON

Artistic teens may not always want to enter the traditional career path, especially in the live entertainment capital of the world. Organizers hope a new performance group will give them an outlet for their creativity while helping them prepare for careers in the arts.

Project Mosaic, now forming, is the brainchild of Mike and Cassandra Rice, who own Gymcats, a gymnastics training facility, and Inversion Entertainment, a production company that creates Cirque du Soleil-style shows. The couple formed a nonprofit branch of Inversion in order to benefit local teens, especially those who would not normally have the money for special training in the arts.

When it comes to gaining the upper hand in the battle against cancer, Julie Hammond is the eternal optimist.

At 42, the King Elementary School physical education assistant is every bit a poster child for overcoming the effects of her non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, one of the leading cancers estimated by the American Cancer Society to strike more than 28,000 United States women in 2006.

Faith Lutheran has the advantage as regional begins

The Class 3A Southern League baseball regional begins Friday at Faith Lutheran High School and the host Crusaders should have more than just the home-field advantage heading in.

Riding a streak of three straight state titles -- two at 2A and one in its first year moving up to 3A last year -- Faith Lutheran is seen by most as not only the team to beat in the Southern League regional, but as the team to beat in the entire state after going 27-12 and beating the Northern League's Lowry, 8-4, in the NIAA state championship game last year.

Lady Eagles ready to battle for state title

By JIM KONST
SPECIAL TO VIEW

The Boulder City High School varsity softball team has some lofty expectations this season, and would like nothing better than to compete for a division and state title this season, in honor of returning head coach Bruce Reid.

In 2005, the Lady Eagles made it to the state championships and finished third in the state. "We should do as well, if not better than last year," Reid said. "We have some high expectations, but I have a more athletic and talented team this season. We have been able to move people around, and so far it's been a great year. We're still working on some little things, but that's what the game is all about." With six talented seniors leading the way, including one of the top pitchers in the Southern Class 3A Division, Tori Forrester, the Lady Eagles will be a force to be reckoned with this season.
