Local artist Diane Eugster won Best of Show at the American Impressionist Society's seventh annual National Juried Show with her "Celtic Braids" painting.
The show opened early last month, and her painting has been on display at the Rockport Center for the Arts in Rockport, Texas.
Eugster's winning painting was inspired at last year's Renaissance Fair at Sunset Park. Her accolades included a cash prize and an advertisement in Southwest Art Magazine.

Rancho High School celebrates last dance
Rancho High School graduates, faculty and students, past and present, are invited to attend a dance celebrating more than 50 years of memories as Rancho High School closes to make room for a new campus.
The dance will be from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. Saturday in the school gymnasium, 1900 E. Owens Ave.

Tour de Cure benefits Diabetes Association
The 2006 American Diabetes Association's Tour de Cure bike ride will start at 6:30 a.m. Saturday at Discovery Park at Paseo Verde Parkway and Palomino Village Drive in Henderson.
There will be three rides, 25, 50 or 100 kilometers, raising money for the 20.8 million Americans affected by diabetes.
Registration is $25 per person. A $100 fundraising minimum per person is required.

Vision Source to award student scholarships
Vision Source, a network of local optometrists, is awarding 10 scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each to seniors graduating this spring from a high school in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas or Henderson.
Students must plan on attending a university, college, community college or trade school in the fall.

Cultural Diversity offers scholarships
The Cultural Diversity Foundation is sponsoring three scholarships that are still available for 2006-07 school year.
All applications must be submitted by May 26. There will be two recipients for the $1,500 Cultural Diversity Foundation Scholarship Award. The essay topic is "your scholastic ambitions and career plans."
And there will be one recipient of the $1,500 Cox Communications Diversity Scholarship Award. The essay topic is to "describe an experience you've had where cultural diversity, or a lack thereof, has made a difference to you."
According to eligibility criteria, all students must have a 3.0 grade-point average; be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours; show proof of financial need (a copy of a tax return); must be enrolled in a college or professional school, or be a high school senior who has been accepted to a college or professional school; provide an official copy of school transcripts; provide two letters of recommendation; and provide a one-page essay.

Woodsy Owl Day to be held May 20
The Super Summer Theatre's 10th annual Woodsy Owl Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 20 at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, 10 miles west of the Las Vegas Beltway on Charleston Boulevard.
Woodsy Owl Day is geared to be a day of fun and entertainment for children, families and the young at heart.
Live events will include a tree-planting ceremony honoring Arbor Day, a patriotic Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, the presentation of colors, arts and crafts, free wagon rides, a chance to climb aboard the Forest Service Fire engine, and kite flying with Boy Scout Troop 64.
Guests will include host of the day Woodsy Owl, McGruff the Crime Dog, Mohave Max, Las Vegas Speedway's mascot Nascar, a Las Vegas Gladiator, the Las Vegas 51s' mascot, and Sonio's friendly chicken.
Refreshments will be for sale, and families also are encouraged to bring their own picnic baskets.
Canyon hike, talk on archeology set
The Nevada State Museum and Historical Society will offer a Wednesday hiking tour of Sloan Canyon, south of the city, and a Thursday lecture on recent archeological findings at Valley of Fire State Park and the Clark County Wetlands.
The moderately strenuous hike is set for 7 to 11 a.m. Reservations must be made by calling 485-5205, Ext. 227. The canyon area encompasses 48,000 acres and a major petroglyph site.
The lecture will convene at 7 p.m. at the museum and historical society home, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, inside Lorenzi Park. Call 486-5205 for more information. Archeo-Nevada is co-sponsoring the event, which will feature remarks by archeologist Rick Ahlstrom and anthropologist Kevin Rafferty.

Las Vegas Little Theatre presents plays
Las Vegas Little Theatre presents "Jest A Second" by James Sherman, a play about parents who come for a visit to celebrate the birth of their first grandchild and to meet their son's new love.
Tickets are $20 for adults, $17 for seniors and students.
The Theatre also presents "Cloud 9" by Caryl Churchill, a parody and spoof of the Victorian Empire from 1880 to 1980.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for seniors/students.
The plays are in separate theaters at 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday through May 21 at Las Vegas Little Theatre, 3920 Schiff Drive.
