The perfect way to say Happy Mother's Day

Mother's Day is upon us once again -- in case you've forgotten, Sunday is the big day -- and it's time to figure out what to do for mom on her special day.

Of course, many moms probably look forward to spending time with their kids to celebrate, so I've looked for a few options for Mother's Day, whether you're in mom's presence or not.

For the chocoholic mom, Ethel M serves up not only a variety of chocolate treats individually and by the box, but also free tours of the chocolate factory, 2 Cactus Garden Drive in Henderson, daily from 8:30 a.m. until 7 p.m. If mom doesn't live nearby, Ethel M also ships its confections and has several pre-made boxes, as well as a design-your-own-box option online at www.ethelm.com.

Julie Anne's Bakery, Cafe and Fine Foods, 10895 S. Eastern Ave in Henderson, also serves up a variety of chocolatey treats, from packs of chocolate-covered, candy-dipped sunflower seeds ($3.50-$4) to the delicious, fudgy signature brownie ($2.50).

For dinner topped off with fudge-dipped treats, The Melting Pot, 2052 Gravel Hill St. or 8955 S. Eastern Ave., serves up an array of options starting at around $31.

The Cupcakery (www.cupcakery.com), 9680 S. Eastern Ave., also serves up a mind-boggling selection of single-serving treats, though you'll want to order in advance because the shop is closed Sundays.

If mom deserves a little pampering, the valley is flush with spa options, from the local Euphoria (dozens of locations valleywide) to the ultra-swanky Canyon Ranch at The Venetian. But if you're on a bit of a budget, or mom's just not the spa-going type, many stores also carry do-it-yourself spa products.

Target stores (www.target.com) stocks everything from a three-piece Mudlark Yuetan Bath collection ($26.99, including almond and goat milk-infused soap and lotion and a travel candle) to the iJoy 100 Robotic Massage Chair ($599) to the Gray Malta Spa ($1,999).

If mom's more the outdoorsy type, REI (www.rei.com) at The District at Green Valley Ranch carries everything a woman of the great outdoors could want or need, from books ("Backpacking: Woman's Guide" and "East Toward Dawn: A Woman's Solo Journey Around the World," both $14.95) to women's backpacking and climbing gear (backpacks from $99 to $350) to boots designed for women ($99 to $229) to kayaks and canoes ($299 to $3,999). REI carries both individual and tandem kayaks, so mom can get away on her own, or spend time on the water with her favorite child.

If mom enjoys time in the kitchen, you could always splurge at Sur La Table (www.surlatable.com, or at the Desert Passage at the Aladdin) on a Le Creuset Pink Whistling Tea Kettle ($60); The Perfect Peeler by Kyocera ($19.95), a mod vegetable peeler mom might not shell out for on her own; or the similarly mod Mario Batali Large Nylon Soft-Grip Turners ($6.95) or Silicone Basting Brushes ($7.95), the Sephra Stainless Steel Chocolate Fondue Fountain ($249.95) or the EuroCuisine Yogurt Maker ($29.95, includes the machine and seven 6-ounce containers).

Though she doesn't live in the area, a few of my own mother's favorite things to do in Las Vegas include getting decadent desserts at La Creperie inside Paris Las Vegas and watching the Bellagio's water show. I always find that combination plus a few of her other Vegas faves make for a splendid mini celebration of mom when she comes to visit.
