View welcomes announcements of recent achievements of Favorite Sons & Daughters who have graduated from local high schools. Achievements may run the gamut from earning a college degree to successfully climbing Mount Everest. Sara Schoemer, 16, has been selected from more than 1,700 students worldwide to attend the United States Air Force Academy's six-day Summer Seminar program in Colorado Springs, Colo., in June.
Selection criteria is based on a student's academic achievement, athletic abilities, leadership skills and desire to pursue a career in the Air Force.
The Summer Seminar program gives high school students the opportunity to experience the Air Force Academy environment by offering workshops, along with some military and physical training scenarios.
Schoemer is a junior attending Advanced Technologies Academy's pre-engineering program. She is the daughter of David and Evelyn Schoemer of Las Vegas.
She is active in the National Honor Society, The Nellis Civil Air Patrol Cadet squadron, and martial arts at Lone Mountain Tae Kwon Do.
Sara hopes to study engineering at the Air Force Academy after high school graduation.
Karla Spann, 15, has been named 2006 Youth of the Year by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas.
Youth of the Year is a nationally recognized honor program to promote and recognize service to the club and community, academic performance and contributions to family and spiritual life.
Spann has been a member of Andre Agassi Boys & Girls Club for more than seven years, participating in numerous programs such as gang prevention programs and Smart Moves, a substance abuse prevention program.
She is a sophomore at Clark High School.
The award was announced at a luncheon in March, where Spann was presented with a $2,500 scholarship and a $500 gift card from General Growth Properties.
As the local winner, she will advance to the state finals where she will compete for a chance to enter a regional competition in Washington, D.C. The winner of that competition will receive a $10,000 scholarship presented by the president of the United States.
Rebecca Lynn Svab, 21, a senior at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz., has been nominated for "Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges," a biographical volume that honors the nation's most noteworthy students of higher learning.
Svab earned the nomination through dedication to her studies, and involvement with different clubs and organizations on campus.
She graduated from Bishop Gorman High School in 2002, and is the daughter of Russell and Debra Svab of Las Vegas.
She is pursuing a degree in global security and intelligence.
Green Valley High School graduates David Schacter and Thomas Gennaro competed in the National Collegiate Boxing Association finals in Reno, April 8.
Schacter, class of 2004, took the 132-pound title for the second time. His record is 14-1. He is the son of Beverly Solow and Robert Schacter of Henderson.
Gennaro, class of 2001, took the 147-pound championship title. He is the son of Louise Gennaro of Henderson and the late Thomas Gennaro Sr.
