Author workshops to begin at Sands Expo

Cultural Diversity offers scholarships
The Cultural Diversity Foundation is sponsoring three scholarships that are still available for 2006-2007 school year. All applications must be submitted by May 26. There will be two recipients for the $1,500 Cultural Diversity Foundation Scholarship Award. The essay topic is "your scholastic ambitions and career plans." And there will be one recipient of the $1,500 Cox Communications Diversity Scholarship Award. The essay topic is to "describe an experience you've had where cultural diversity, or a lack thereof, has made a difference to you."
According to eligibility criteria, all students must have a 3.0 grade-point average; be enrolled in a minimum of six credit hours; show proof of financial need (a copy of a tax return); must currently be enrolled in a college or professional school, or be a high school senior who has been accepted to a college or professional school; provide an official copy of school transcripts; provide two letters of recommendation; and provide a one-page essay.
The Super Summer Theatre's 10th annual Woodsy Owl Day will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on May 20 at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, 10 miles west of the Las Vegas Beltway on Charleston Boulevard.
Woodsy Owl Day is geared to be a day of fun and entertainment for children, families and the young at heart. Live events will include a tree-planting ceremony honoring Arbor Day, a patriotic Naval Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps, the presentation of colors, arts and crafts, free wagon rides, a chance to climb aboard the Forest Service Fire engine, and kite flying with Boy Scout Troop 64.
Guests will include host of the day Woodsy Owl, McGruff the Crime Dog, Mohave Max, Las Vegas Speedway's mascot Nascar, a Las Vegas Gladiator, the Las Vegas 51s' mascot, and Sonio's friendly chicken.
Refreshments will be for sale, and families also are encouraged to bring their own picnic baskets.
UNLVino wine tasting set to begin Thursday
The three-day, 32nd annual UNLVino wine tasting event begins with a champagne and sparkling wine tasting from 7-10 p.m. Thursday, poolside at the Hard Rock, 4455 Paradise Road. Admission is $75.
Wines from Australia, New Zealand and South Africa will be the focus from 7 to 10 p.m. Friday at Cili Restaurant at Bali Hai Golf Course, 5160 Las Vegas Boulevard South. Tickets are $50.
A grand tasting featuring wine vintages from around the world will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Paris Resort, 3655 Las Vegas Boulevard. Tickets are $50 in advance, $75 at the door.

NLV to host food and music festival
The City of North Las Vegas will hold its fourth annual Tastes & Tunes Festival from 5-11 p.m. Friday and from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturday along Civic Center Drive in front of North Las Vegas City Hall, 2200 Civic Center Drive.
A diverse lineup of musical guests will include Next Movement, The Dazz Band, and Lakeside. The event also will feature an authentic Mexican village with food and crafts, a carnival and USA-sanctioned boxing bouts.

Memory Care Connection set for May
Care4Life and Willow Creek will be hosting Memory Care Connection from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Acacia Springs, 8630 W. Nevso Drive, near Flamingo Road and Durango Drive.
Memory Care Connection is an educational and awareness-raising event about memory health, Alzheimer's disease and related illnesses, and offers caregiver strategies and community resources aimed at anyone who is interested in memory care or concerned about memory problems.
The day will include distribution of information and educational materials, alternative therapies to care for loved ones, door prizes and complimentary memory screenings.
Memory Care Connection is a national initiative of the Alzheimer's Foundation of America and is being held during Older Americans Month in May.
