Junior Giants seek players, coaches
The Las Vegas Junior Giants are holding sign-ups until the beginning of June for players ages 4-14, as well as for coaches.
Interested players can sign up from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St.

MVCS boys win elementary crown
The Mountain View Christian School boys elementary school basketball team won the Private School Athletic Conference championship, defeating Warren-Walker, 29-25.
The Saints completed a undefeated season and were led by Justyn Anderson, Cortland LeBoeuf, Jaylen Henry, Jason Pak, T.J. Engel and Brandon Menendez.

Bishop Gorman High School girls basketball coach Sheryl Krmpotich will be holding a basketball camp for boys and girls ages 4-18 at Christ the King Church, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive. Session I will run from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday. Session II is scheduled from 4 to 7 p.m. on June 8-9 and from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. on June 10. The cost is $75 for each session for early registrants and $85 at the door.

Blazer camp to tip off in June
The 14th annual Blazer Basketball Camp, run by Durango High School boys varsity coach Al La Rocque, will hold two sessions this summer at Durango's gym, 7100 W. Dewey Drive.
The first session runs from June 12-15, with the second session held from June 19-22. Both sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The cost of the camp, open for boys and girls ages 8-16, is $125. Campers will receive a camp T-shirt, photo package, a personal evaluation and their own Nike basketball, as well as expertise from the entire Durango basketball staff, camp counselors and players. Players who sign up for both sessions can do so for $225.

Church to offer summer camp
Christ the King, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, is offering a summer basketball camp from June 26-28 for grades 4-9.
Durango High School girls varsity coach John Bartleson will run the camp. The cost per camper is $85 if postmarked before May 19, and $100 for registrants after that date.

TBA offers camps for youngsters
The Tarkanian Basketball Academy is offering a year-round program for all Track Breakers in grades 1-5.
The cost is $95 per week and the program runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program includes an academic binder, T-shirt, snacks and lunch.
Breakers learn fundamentals and compete in sports games, such as basketball, volleyball and soccer. Xbox and PlayStation tournaments are held daily. The learning center staff will academically challenge breakers with games and activities.
Sunday Skills camp to get under way
The Tarkanian Basketball Academy will offer a weekly two-hour Sunday Skills Camp for boys and girls of all ages and skill levels.
The camp will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sundays at the Stations Sports Complex beginning on May 7. The cost is $15 per class.
Academy to offer recreational league
The Tarkanian Basketball Academy will offer a recreational league. Interested parties should register between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. at the school.
The cost is $560 per team and includes eight regulation games, entry into the league championship playoffs, trophies for all division winners and all referee/scorekeeper fees.
Games will be played at the Station's Sports Complex on Friday evenings and Saturdays from May 6 to June 17. The number of teams are limited and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

Academics, sports academy under way
Boys and girls ages 7 to 15 of all skill levels can participate in the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA's Academy of Academics and Sports.
A new session gets under way May 1. Headed by former UNLV, NBA and WNBA players, the academy focuses on basketball fundamentals, advanced game execution and academic success.
Players can access a computer-learning center. Homework assistance will be provided.
The program is offered from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The cost is $79 per month, per player. Participants receive $25 off the first month when they donate a new basketball to the academy. Financial aid is available for those who qualify.

YMCA offers 70 summer camps
The Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, and the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, will offer 70 specialty camps from June 12 to Aug. 25 for youth ages 5 to 17.
Registration can be conducted at both branches. Prices vary based on camp. Choices include sports, travel, theatre, cooking, crafts and teen camps.

CYCLING
Tour de Cure set to pedal
The Tour de Cure, an annual national event held to raise money for diabetes, will be held May 13 and will start at Henderson's Discovery Park, 2011 Paseo Verde Parkway.
Three routes have been established for riders: the 100K (Check-in: 6:30 a.m., start: 7 a.m.); the 50K (Check-in: 7:30 a.m., start: 8 a.m.); and the 25K (Check-in: 8 a.m., start: 8:30 a.m.)
The 100K route will be near Hoover Dam, while the 50K and 25K rides will go through mostly residential areas.
Top teams from 2005 included Team CES (Communication Electronic Systems), Team Levi and Haiku Peloton. The top individuals were Frank Ellis, Jerry McNeish and Larry Howard.

YMCA offers Nia technique classes
Nia Technique classes are held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane.
In addition, classes are held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. on Saturday at the Durango Hills Community Center, 3521 N. Durango Drive.
The YMCA is the only organization in Las Vegas to offer these classes, led by Stacey Hall, a certified blue-belt Nia instructor.

Steiner's tourney on tap at Paiute
Steiner's is hosting its 14th annual golf tournament on May 12 at the Paiute Golf Resort, 10325 Nu Wav Kaiv Blvd.
The $135 admission cost includes unlimited beverages on the course and all you can eat and drink at the awards ceremony following the tourney at Steiner's, 1750 N. Buffalo Drive. There also will be a $10,000 hole-in-one contest.

Three local golf clubs were honored in Golf Tips magazine's recent travel annual.
Aliante Golf Club, 3100 W. Elkhorn Drive, North Las Vegas, was tabbed No. 1 Best Value in Las Vegas and No. 4 Player Friendly Golf Club in Las Vegas. Angel Park Golf Club, 100 S. Rampart Blvd., was named No. 1 Player Friendly Golf Club in Las Vegas and No. 2 Best Lessons in Las Vegas; and The Legacy Golf Club, 130 Par Excellence Drive, Henderson, was tabbed No. 2 Player Friendly Golf Club in Las Vegas.

Police-Firefighters Tournament on tap
The fourth annual Police Versus Firefighters Charity Golf Tournament will be held May 25 at the Highland Falls Golf Club, 10201 Sun City Blvd.
Check-in is at 7 a.m., with tee-off at 8 a.m. The cost is $120 per player or $480 per foursome.
There will be hole-in-one prizes, a longest drive and closest to the pin contest, a raffle and other awards. The entry fee includes greens fees, golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch and a tournament hat.
Registration will be held the day of the event if openings are available. All proceeds will benefit the Southern Nevada Police Athletic League and the UMC Burn Center.

Alzheimer's tourney to tee off on June 3
The second annual Alzheimer's Memorial Golf Tournament is set for June 3 at the Aliante Golf Club, 3100 W. Elkhorn Drive in North Las Vegas. The sign-up deadline is May 20.
The cost is $75 per person and includes greens fees, cart, range balls and lunch. There also will be raffle prizes, a putting contest, a closest-to-the-pin contest, a longest drive contest and a giant team skins game.
The tourney begins at 7 a.m., with check-in beginning at 5:30 a.m. The tournament will have a shotgun start and will be played in the four-person scramble format.

Sign-ups to begin at Durango Hills YMCA
Youth ages 3-12 years are invited to tumble into the joys of gymnastics and begin learning routines on different apparatus at the Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive.
A new session will run from today to June 6. Participants ages 3 to 5 will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday or from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Gymnastics I will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. for ages 6 to 7 and from 6 to 7 p.m. for ages 8 to 12 on Thursday.
Gymnastics II will meet from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for ages 6 to 7 and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. for ages 8 to 12 on Saturday.

LACROSSE
League to sponsor free clinic in June
The Las Vegas Lacrosse League is sponsoring a free lacrosse clinic for boys and girls in grades 3-8.
The two-day clinic, scheduled for June 2-3 at Oxford Park in Summerlin, is intended for children that have never played the sport.
The clinic begins at 4 p.m. June 2, with registration with the first-day skills session running from 5 to 7 p.m. The clinic concludes June 3, with the second skills session running from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., followed by a watermelon break and an exhibition game.
No pads are required or will be allowed and there will be no contact in the camp. Participants should bring their own stick, be prepared to borrow one or purchase an entry-level stick and ball at the clinic for $30. Those interested in reserving a stick for the clinic should call 845-5473.
Instruction will be given on the basics: throwing, catching, scooping, dodging and the rules. A parental consent form will be required before participation.

WRESTLING
Residents perform at U.S. Nationals
Two local wrestlers participated in the U.S. National Wrestling Championships on April 12-15 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
Eldorado graduate Matt Azevedo qualified for the World Team Trials on May 27-28 in Sioux City, Iowa, when he finished second in his 121-pound weight class. He lost to Henry Cejudo of Colorado Springs, Colo., in the championship match. Cejudo also qualified for the World Team Trials with the win.
Durango High School senior Joey Martin participated in the FILA Junior Nationals and took sixth place, losing to Tyler Graff in his fifth-place match.
