Spring break clinic set for April 10-12
Giambi's Hitman Baseball Academy, 1051 Mary Crest Road, Suite J, will be holding a three-day hitting and pitching clinic to help children ages 8-14 improve their skills. The clinic will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. April 10-12 and costs $90 per child.

Western Little League plans Opening Day
Western Little League is holding its annual Opening Day Ceremony/Fundraiser Carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Doc Romeo Sports Complex, at Cheyenne Avenue and Buffalo Drive behind the Rainbow Library. Mayor Oscar Goodman is the planned guest of honor and will throw out the first pitch while Miss Teen Nevada 2005 Kelli Crossley is set to sing the National Anthem.
The Eldorado High School Marching Regimen will perform, as will the Silver Dolls Dance Team. There will be carnival games, face painting, balloon artists, tattoos, a barbecue and food court and fingerprint/ID kits. There also will be hot air balloon rides for $10 per person, weather permitting.
A scout team for various professional Major League Baseball organizations is looking for players.
Tryouts will be held on April 16 at Oxford Field, at Anasazi Road and Far Hills Drive in Summerlin. All players must report to the field no later than 9 a.m. Registration and tryouts will begin at 9:30 a.m.
All high school athletes born after July 31, 1988 are invited to attend. The tryout fee is $15. The scout team will attend the Memorial Day Tournament which will be held May 27-29, as well as a June tournament.
The Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Reno-Gazette Journal named their Class 4A All-State teams and Players of the Year in high school basketball. Palo Verde's P'Allen Stinnett and Centennial's Italee Lucas were named Players of the Year.
First-team boys selections from Southern Nevada included Stinnett, Durango's Andre McFarland, Palo Verde's Nate Schulte and Valley's Hank Thorns. Second-team members included Bishop Gorman's Marcus Lawrence, Coronado's Tysson Poots, Rancho's Ariece Perkins and Silverado's Heiden Ratner. Third-team selections were Clark's Dana Kendrid, Gorman's Jonathan Tavernari and Rancho's Terrence McGill.
First-team girls picks were Lucas, Gorman's Lauren Hoisington and Desert Pines' Katie Williams. Named to the second team were Mojave's Chelsea Hopkins, Durango's Lindy La Rocque and Basic's Amber Purdie. Third-team selections included Centennial's Johnna Brown, Gorman's Ashley Gayle and Cheyenne's Monique Oliver.
Gorman head coach Sheryl Krmpotich, whose team won its first state title in February, took home Coach of the Year honors for girls' hoops.
All-Greater Nevada hoops team named
Several local players were named to the All-Greater Nevada boys basketball team earlier this month.
First-team selections included Faith Lutheran's Tyler Norman and Stephen McCall and The Meadows School's Mychal Martinez. Chosen for the second team was Faith Lutheran's Chad Breeden.
Third-team selections included Trinity's Jon Atkins and Neal Ekpoudia. The Meadow School's Richie Smith was an Honorable Mention selection.
Adult leagues to begin April 17 and 18
The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites individual basketball players ages 18 and older to participate in evening leagues that begin April 17 and 18 and continue through May 31.
Adults 40 and older will play Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m. Adults 18 and older will compete Tuesday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m.
The cost is $25 per person, plus officials' fees. Registration is open through April 14. Games will be played at Brinley Middle School, 2480 Maverick St., and Gibson Middle School, 3900 W. Washington Ave.

Boys & Girls Clubs holding registration
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas is holding registration for its spring basketball league for boys and girls in grades 6-12 at the Donald W. Reynolds Unit in Green Valley and the Lied Memorial Unit.
Registration is being taken from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday for players in both the recreational and advanced divisions. The cost is $60 and includes an annual membership to the club, 10 regular season games, a postseason tournament and a personal team T-shirt.
Regular season games for the Reynolds League started March 27. All games and practices will be held at the Donald W. Reynolds Boys & Girls Club, 2980 S. Robindale Road.
Regular season games for the Lied Memorial League will begin April 10 with all games and practices being held at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 S. Lindell St.

Durango Hills YMCA holding hoops sign-ups
The Durango Hills YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, invites boys and girls ages 6-15 to sign up for a youth basketball league.
The program runs from April 24 to June 16. One-hour practices will be held Monday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings at different times. Games will be held between 6 and 9 p.m. on Friday, and between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Saturday.

New ABA reps to hold team clinic
Team representatives from the new Las Vegas American Basketball Association basketball team, the Venom, will hold a free "Basketball and Life" clinic at the Veterans Memorial Recreation Center, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive, on Sunday.
Team general manager Dan Savage and several well-known coaches will lead more than 30 participants through a rigorous series of drills before taking an opportunity to speak to the kids about the importance of family, school and making good decisions. The impromptu clinic will be the first of what organizers hope will be many free clinics that the team will participate in throughout the year.
Notable participants scheduled to appear are former UNLV and NBA players Tyrone Nesby, George Ackles and Gerald Paddio along with Dave Korfman and former Arizona State player Ron Riley.
The team will hold a short press conference immediately following the clinic to announce the team name, logo, Web site and community outreach program.

FENCING
Marks wins second foil encounter
Foil fencers from the Las Vegas Valley's four fencing salles gathered March 5 at the Fencing Academy of Nevada to compete in youth foil fencing and add last-minute points to their tallies in the third and final foil encounter of the 2006 Vegas Cup series.
An exciting medals round in Mixed Youth 12 and Under saw Amanda Marks of Red Rock Fencing Center beat Nik Nik Ameli of Fencing Academy of Nevada, 2-0, and then go on to beat Ja Manipon of Salle De Nord, 2-0, to clinch the gold.
"This was the last of the Cup's three foil events and the overall winner will be selected based on his or her two best finishes," said Frank Van Dyke, director at Red Rock Fencing Center. "Amanda took the gold in the second foil encounter last month, and again in this encounter, so we'll see how the points add up."
Marks, a 2005 and 2004 Vegas Cup winner, said this year's competition was especially keen about the increased competition this year.
"Nik Nik is nationally ranked and Ja is always dangerous, plus so many other kids from all the clubs have been developing over the past few years that it really turned into a great season," Marks said.
Red Rock Fencing Center's Mai Carmen Requena-Komuro, who only recently switched to foil fencing, also medaled, taking the bronze in the Mixed Youth 14 and Under.
The final saber and epee encounter of this year's Las Vegas Cup will be held April 9, starting at noon, at Red Rock Fencing Center, located on West Flamingo Road. The public is invited to attend.

Corporate Challenge tune-up scheduled
The Red Rock Fencing Center invites all participating Corporate Challenge fencing teams for a tune-up on Tuesday nights from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
RRFC will have two-hour team strategy and fencing strip tactic lessons for those interested. The competition will be held May 15-18 at the Red Rock Fencing Center, 8665 W. Flamingo Road, Suite 117.
Nevada Youth Football League announced registration is under way for 11-man, full-contact football for the spring 2006 season. Sign-ups for all players will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays, and from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays through April 8 at 1651 S. Buffalo Drive.
To register, participants must have either a player identification card from NYFL, or an original birth certificate and utility bill. For the Youth Division, ages 6-14, the cost is $160. For High School Division, ages 14-17, the cost is $260. Payment may be made by cash or money order only. Players must be present for weigh-in and must be accompanied by a parent.

Volunteers needed for Takefuji Classic
The LPGA Takefuji Classic is scheduled for April 11-16 at the Las Vegas Country Club, and tournament officials are looking for volunteers for all positions.
Perks include a daily lunch, an extra club badge -- worth a $50 ticket -- and participation in the tournament-ending volunteer raffle and party.
Las Vegas Roller Hockey will be holding a 10-week season that begins play on April 29.
The league is for children ages 5-14 and costs $125. Players get one hour of practice time weekly along with jerseys and trophies.
The league also is looking for middle and high school teams as well as coaches for the upcoming season, which begins in the fall. LVRH also has adult league that play Sunday through Thursday nights with all levels of play from beginner to advanced.
A competitive under-11 girls soccer team has a few openings. There are no club fees or monthly costs to participate.

TENNIS
NTA to hold several classes
The Nevada Tennis Association will start conducting classes for juniors and adults at various area locations the week of April 24. The classes are for entry level to intermediate players ages 5 and up. The fee is $50 per person for the six-week session.
Classes focus on the fundamental skills of tennis and improvement of those skills through hands-on instruction, drills, games and competitive play. Racquets and balls are provided at no charge.
