Museum displays minimalist work

The Las Vegas Art Museum, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., is showing an exhibit called "Southern California Minimalism" through Friday.

General admission is $6, seniors pay $5 and students with a school ID pay $3. Children under age 12 are admitted for free.

Exhibition features post-Sept. 11 photos

Charleston Heights Arts Center is showing artist Laura Kleger's photographs from her collection titled "Home Front."

The subject of the show is the social landscape, both public and private, in post-Sept. 11 America.

The show will run through April 2 at 800 S. Brush St. Admission is free.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Elementary school plans Spring Carnival

Bonner Elementary School, 765 Crestdale Lane, will host its first Spring Carnival from 4 to 8 p.m. on Friday.

There will be carnival games, balloon animals and fun family activities.

Red Rock ready for annual Spring Fling

The Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area will hold Spring Fling, its annual celebration of springtime in the desert, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

The event will include a children's activity area with crafts and games. Storytelling will feature Susan Strauss and Great Bald Eagle will provide flute music. Artisans will exhibit their work and author Mike Miller will sign his "Thomas the Tortoise" books. Booths will include information on the desert, gardening and conservation efforts.

Hospice to host Celebration of Life

The Nathan Adelson Hospice Foundation will hold its third annual Celebration of Life Live Butterfly Release at 2 p.m. on April 23 at Hills Park in Summerlin. The event is open to the public.

Butterflies are $25 each and are accompanied by a commemorative gift. A limited supply of butterflies are still available for purchase. People are encouraged to call ahead to purchase their butterflies.

"This exceptional event is a unique way to honor a loved one and gains momentum every year," said Laura Norcia, events manager. "Native American legend tells us that if you whisper a prayer to a butterfly it will deliver that prayer to the Great Spirit. This is a great way to help children cope with the loss of a loved one."

In addition to the live butterfly release, there will be a nondenominational service, musical entertainment and a ceremonial labyrinth to walk. Families are invited to bring a picnic lunch and making it an afternoon event.

Safe Nest launches new campaign

Safe Nest recently announced the launch of a ground-breaking campaign, Coaching Boys Into Men, and is extending an invitation to men throughout the valley to take a leadership role to prevent violence against women and children.

The campaign includes television and radio public service announcements and educational resources for parents, coaches, teachers and community leaders. The message of the campaign is simple: Men can teach boys that violence does not equal strength.

Vision Forum set for senior center

A Vision Forum is planned for from 9 a.m. April 12 at the Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road. The event will include exhibitions by local, state and national equipment providers and service organizations for the visually impaired.

Attendees can attend five different 30-minute presentations in addition to the opening and closing sessions, a free lunch and a raffle drawing. Registration by Friday is required to assure a reservation for a free lunch and a free raffle ticket, as well as for participation in water aerobics, kayaking or canoeing.

Women's group to gather at library

The next general meeting of the Brandeis National Women's Committee, Las Vegas Chapter, is planned for 1:30 p.m. Monday at Rainbow Library, 3150 N. Buffalo Drive. It will include election of officers and board members.

The guest speaker will be Clark County District Judge Michael Cherry. He will discuss the court system and current challenges facing Las Vegas and the state.

Hot Pink Mamas plan next meeting

The Hot Pink Mamas, a female business networking group, plans its next meeting for 6 to 9 p.m. April 5 at the Lakeside Center, 2620 Regatta Drive, Suite 102, in Desert Shores.
