The Kiwanis Club of Northwest Las Vegas donated dictionaries to third-graders at Eisenberg Elementary School on March 3, during a morning assembly.
This is the third year the group has given the books to all the third-graders at Kahre, Eisenberg and Park elementary schools. Last year about 400 books were donated.
The books are for the students to take with them throughout their school careers.
"Some kids go home and don't have a computer or any reference books," said Kiwanis Club member Irwin "Ike" Kaiser.
During the assembly students were given tips on how to use the dictionaries and teachers said they will work the books into their lessons.
Kaiser said the third-graders are at the recommended age group for these specific dictionaries.
"We've had a fabulous response," he said. "Last year the kids sent thank-you letters. One kid asked, 'Are you going to do this next year? My sister will be in third grade then.' "
Eisenberg students presented Kaiser and his wife, club member Maxine Kaiser, with a poster each student signed.
"They were so excited," Maxine Kaiser said. "They didn't know (the dictionaries) were theirs to keep."
Ike Kaiser said the books are purchased using funds from many projects the group does throughout the year.
He said the Kiwanis Club is dedicated to serving the children of the world through this and many other projects. The group works with Key Clubs at Cimarron-Memorial, Faith Lutheran, Centennial and Durango high schools, where members teach children about community responsibility.
The Kiwanis Club also performs community service projects including a monthly clean-up at Red Rock Canyon, participation in Clark County Reading week and tutoring at Park and Eisenberg elementary schools.
The group meets from 7:15 to 8:30 a.m. every Tuesday morning at the Las Vegas Golf Club, 4300 W. Washington Blvd. Everyone is welcome to attend the breakfast meeting.
