BASEBALL

Warriors seeking club players

The LV Warriors Baseball Club is looking for players age 9-10 for competitive play. The team is seeking aggressive players who love baseball, love to play and would like to be involved long term in a club that plays local leagues, local tournaments and some tournaments in neighboring states.

BASKETBALL

Boys All-Region, Division teams named

The prep basketball All-Sunset Region team was named last month and includes Nate Schulte and P'Allen Stinnett (Palo Verde), Emmanuel Olekaibe (Cimarron-Memorial), Dana Kendrid (Clark), Mike Stewart (Bonanza) and Andre McFarland (Durango). The Trailblazers' McFarland was named the region's MVP with Bonanza's George Jaekle earning Coach of the Year honors.

The All-Northwest Division first team included Schulte, Stinnett, Olekaibe, Jamarion Lewis (Centennial), Darion Norris and Donte Poole (Mojave) and Markel Farmer (Shadow Ridge). Lucas Gums (Palo Verde), Melvyn Oliver (Cheyenne), Jared Noa (Centennial), Chris James (Cimarron) and Christian McMillan (Shadow Ridge) were named to the second team.

All-Southwest Division first team honorees included McFarland, Kendrid, Stewart, DeShawn Williams (Clark) and Dru Johnson (Western) with Dominic Powell and Jason Walter (Spring Valley), Marcus Lawrence (Bishop Gorman), Marcus Burns (Clark) and Chris Scott (Bonanza) all being named to the second team.

The All-Southern League team was named and several players from Southern Nevada were selected. First team selections for the boys included Kyle Kersenbrock (Trinity), Jared Dean and Oliver Complot (Lake Mead) and Manny Mathis (Mountain View). Trinity's Jon Atkins was named league MVP with Calvary Chapel's Marlon Watson and Lake Mead's Jeff Newton sharing Co-Coach of the Year honors.

Second team picks included Brent Clauson (Calvary Chapel), Stephen Byrd (Lake Mead) and Neil Ekpoudia (Trinity).

On the girls' side, first team selections included Talibah McClenton and Randall Van Kempen (Mountain View), Jenna Willis (Lake Mead) and Kerri Reyes (Calvary Chapel).

Second team picks included Riyann Flannelly (Laughlin), Nita Wilber and Kayla Masarik (Trinity), Rachel Henson (Lake Mead) and Jessica Menendez (Mountain View).

Final MaxPreps.com poll released

Despite capturing the Class 4A state boys championship by beating Rancho, 87-63, on Feb. 25 at the Lawlor Events Center in Reno, the Reno High School boys basketball team was ranked third in the state by MaxPreps.com in its March 1 poll.

The win by the Huskies (27-5) gave the school its first boys title since 1963 and marked the first time that a school from outside Las Vegas won the large-school championship since South Tahoe, Calif., in 1992.

The final top 10 rankings on MaxPreps are: (1) Bishop Gorman, (2) Palo Verde, (3) Reno, (4) Rancho, (5) Foothill, (6) Valley, (7) Galena, (8) Mojave, (9) Durango and (10) Silverado.

CHAMPS league taking registrations

CHAMPS Youth Basketball is taking registration for its Spring Youth Basketball season.

League age is 8-18 with a competitive and a recreational league available. Leagues are formed on the west side of town and in Henderson for boys and girls, teams or individuals.

All games are announced, and awards are given at every game to the MVP as well as the Champ of the Game. The cost is $110 per player.

The league is directed by Steve Boyack, head basketball coach at Cimarron-Memorial High School, and he is assisted by other high school head coaches from around the city. Champs cheerleading also is available.

CHEERLEADING

YMCA accepting youth sign-ups

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is accepting sign-ups for youth basketball cheerleading.

Participants can learn cheer/dance routines and perform during Saturday games. The program, open to youth ages 7-15, is held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays from March 21 through June 10.

The cost is $55 for members and $65 for nonmembers. Volunteer coaches also are needed.

YMCA offers Nia Technique classes

Nia Technique classes are held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesday mornings at the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane.

In addition, classes are held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. on Saturdays at the Durango Hills Community Center, 3521 N. Durango Drive.

The YMCA is the only organization in Las Vegas to offer these classes, which are led by Stacey Hall, a certified blue-belt Nia instructor.

Gym holding weight-loss contest

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA's Biggest Loser contest is under way and runs through May 20.

The cost is $20 for members and $80 for nonmembers, which includes YMCA membership during contest. The group that loses the most weight wins the competition.

FOOTBALL

NYFL holds spring season registration

Nevada Youth Football League announced registration is under way for 11-man, full-contact football for the spring 2006 season. NYFL is the largest spring and fall league in Nevada.

Sign-ups for all players will be held from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays and from 6 to 7 p.m. on Tuesdays through April 8 at 1651 S. Buffalo Drive. To register, participants must have either a player identification card from NYFL or an original birth certificate and utility bill.

For the Youth Division, ages 6 to 14, the registration cost is $160. For High School Division, ages 14 through 17, the cost is $260. Payment may be made by cash or money order only. Players must be present for weigh-in and must be accompanied by a parent.

Practice is already under way, with games starting April 15. The season will conclude in mid-June.

Gaughan, Calderon receive awards

Bishop Gorman High School's Kelly Gaughan was named Nevada's Gatorade Player of the Year. The senior midfielder/forward led the Lady Gaels to the playoffs this winter and signed a letter of intent to attend Weber State University where she will play for Big Sky Conference Coach of the Year Tim Crompton. The Wildcats went 14-4-2 last season including a perfect 9-0-0 record at home.

Clark High School senior Luis Calderon won the boys Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year award after leading the Chargers to a second-place finish in the Sunset Region playoffs. The midfielder scored seven goals and registered 20 assists on the season.

Centennial's Owens Concordia bound

Centennial High School standout Becky Owens has signed to attend the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics' Concordia University in Seward, Neb.

Owens, a Bulldog at Centennial, will remain a Bulldog in college for Concordia, which went 9-8-2 last season under first-year coach Rob Giesbrecht and hosted a Great Plains Athletic Conference tournament game for the first time in school history.

Club team now seeking players

A competitive under-11 girls soccer team has a few openings. There are no club fees or monthly costs. The team has finished at the top of its division six seasons in a row.

Fastpitch tourney scheduled this month

A March Madness youth softball tournament will be held from March 25-26 in Las Vegas. There is a four-game guarantee, and the cost is $350 per team. The tournament is a Western World Series qualifier.

VOLLEYBALL

New outdoor sand leagues to begin

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites sand volleyball teams to join new leagues that are forming for play at Centennial Hills Park, located at North Buffalo Drive and Elkhorn Road.

Competition will begin Monday. Registration is under way and will be by teams only. League play will continue for about seven weeks. Players must be at least 16 years of age to participate.

Coed teams of four will play on Monday nights at beginner and intermediate levels. Registration is $100 per team. Women's and men's teams of two will play on Tuesday evenings at intermediate and advanced levels. Registration is $50 per team. Coed beginner teams of six will compete on Thursday nights. Registration is $150 per team.

Teams may have unlimited substitutes. Volleyballs, nets and outdoor courts will be provided.

Men's leagues slated to start

A new men's advanced volleyball league will begin on March 29 at the Dula Gymnasium, 441 E. Bonanza Road.

The fee for participation in the league is $100 per team, and members ages 16 and older must sign up as a team. Registration will open Monday. A maximum of 12 teams of four or more players each will be accepted.

Each team will have four players on the court at a time. Game times will be at 6:30, 7:30 or 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. The league will last about seven weeks. Players need to wear comfortable clothing and rubber-soled gym shoes. Volleyballs, nets and indoor courts will be provided.

The league is sponsored by the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services.

Corporate Challenge Tune-up planned

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites volleyball teams with players ages 18 and older to participate in the Corporate Challenge Tune-up Volleyball League from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays through April 24.

Team registration is required and is open through Friday. The cost is $25 per person, plus officials' fees. Rubber-soled gym shoes are required. Volleyballs and nets will be provided.

Games will be played in the Brinley Middle School gym at 2480 Maverick St. and in the Gibson Middle School gym at 3900 W. Washington Ave.

The league is sponsored by Brinley and Gibson Community Schools, which provide supervised sports, recreation and leisure activities for youth and adults.
