Goorjians get a nod from competing coach

What a great article on the Goorjians! ("Family Teamwork," Feb. 21 Southwest View and Centennial View; "Keeping up Traditions," Feb. 21 Summerlin View and Summerlin South View).

I have known Ed and Greg for 30 years. I never miss a breakfast in Del Mar when I am down there during the summer. My college coach Dan Ayala also attends. He later became Tark's assistant at UNLV and then the UNLV women's coach. It is like the good 'ol boys club in Del Mar. Lots of basketball games sitting there.

Let me tell you a quick story. I was a 25-year-old -- young -- coach, just starting out at Western High School.

In 1977, Greg's junior year, we played Crescenta Valley in the finals of the Holiday Prep Classic and Greg hits 51 on us!

As fate would have it, we played them in the finals the next year in the same tourney and I pop off to the newspaper that Goorjian isn't going to get 51 if I have to guard him myself.

He only got 49! To this day, I tease Greg that he averages 50 a game against me.

What a beautiful shot he had. He looked like a ballerina playing basketball -- very smooth.

You sure do a good job of getting the details of a story.
