Sewing plus service
School group donates 33 quilts to Child Haven

Sure, they knew they were helping a good cause. Sure, they realized they were cementing their knowledge of geometry with hands-on work. But the students involved with Garside Junior High School's Quilting Club this past school year genuinely liked making quilts for Child Haven.

The club was the brainchild of Jeannette Bautista, Garside's math teacher. Her interest in sewing, combined with a $1,000 grant from State Farm Insurance through Youth Service America, led to the formation of the club.

Fab Four face the future
Sierra Vista group graduates after years of success

Together they helped make the Sierra Vista High School softball program one of the premier squads in the entire Silver State.

Kylee Kissane, Stacey Burgos, Rebecca Rumsey and Amber Heinz played for four years on the Mountain Lions varsity team, and along with co-head coach Jerome Streets -- who began at the southwest school the same year as his Fab Four -- they turned the then-1-year-old school into an instant powerhouse on the softball diamond.
