Safe Nest in need of items for children

Safe Nest, Clark County's largest agency devoted solely to domestic violence issues, is in need of donations this summer for children staying in their shelter.

Items needed are: baby wipes and diapers, pull-up diapers, summer clothing, sandals and flip-flops, sunscreen, hats, socks and underwear.

Donations can be dropped off from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at the agency's counseling office, 2915 W. Charleston Blvd. Suite 12. Call 860-8092 for information. Visit www.safenest.org for more information on the agency and their work.

Fourth of July bash planned at park

The seventh annual Independence Day Jubilee is set for 6 to 9:30 p.m. July 3 at Seastrand Park, 6330 Camino Eldorado. The free event will feature music and food from a variety of vendors and children's activities.

Teen party planned at municipal pool

The city of Las Vegas plans to host a pool party for 13 to 17 year-olds on Friday at the Municipal Pool at 431 E. Bonanza Road.

There will be dancing to live music and refreshments can be purchased.

Showcase set for Friday and Saturday

The Clark County Parks and Recreation Department and Mexico Vivo plan to present an international dance and music showcase with costumes and folk dance from around the world at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 S. McLeod Drive.

Tickets are $7 or $5 for children and seniors. Call 455-7340 for more information.

Urban League to host 'Tribute to Our Own'

The Las Vegas-Clark County Urban League will sponsor a fundraising dinner and black-tie event at 6 p.m. Sunday in the ballroom of the Bellagio.

The event celebrates the league's first year of service and recognizes key supporters for the organization, which has a mission to empower African Americans and other disadvantaged families and individuals.

James Rogers, chancellor of the Nevada System of Higher Education will chair the gala. Robert Siller, former special agent in charge of the FBI, Las Vegas unit, and current Nevada State Gaming Control Board member will receive the Vernon E. Jordan Jr. Civic Award. Clark County Commissioner Yvonne Atkinson Gates will receive the Dr. William U. Pearson Community Service Award.

All proceeds will be used to endow the programs in the future Dr. William U. Pearson Community Center. Tickets are $125. For more information, call 636-3949 or visit www.lvccul.org.

Trombone quartet to perform Sunday

The Dynamic Trombone Quartet will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Boulevard North.

Walter Boenig leads the group in music from classical to country.
