Singer to perform at Borders today

Singer Anne DeChant is slated to appear from 4 to 5:30 p.m. today at Borders Books Cafe, 2190 Rainbow Blvd. On Friday, she is also slated to be part of the two-day Groovefest held in Cedar City, Utah. Then she returns to perform from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Borders at 10950 W. Charleston Blvd.

DeChant has performed at Lilith Fair and opened for Nora Jones, Train, Vonda Shepard, 10,000 Maniacs and Stevie Nicks. For more information, visit www.anneedechant.com.

Philharmonic gets patriotic for the Fourth

The annual Star-Spangled Spectacular featuring the Las Vegas Philharmonic is scheduled for 8 p.m. July 4 at Hills Park in Summerlin. The park is located on Hillpointe Road west of Rampart Boulevard.

The concert will be full of patriotic music and followed by fireworks. General admission is $20 and pavilion seating is $90. Gates open at 4:30 p.m. For more information, call 895-2787.

Scholarship to help returning students

UNLV's Jean Nidetch Women's Center is offering a special scholarship to help working adults return to school. The Osher Re-entry Scholarship, funded by the Bernard Osher Foundation, provides students returning to college after a break of five years or more with financial, social and academic support.

Under the program, up to 10 applicants may be awarded $2,500 per semester, or up to $5,000 per year if eligibility is maintained. To qualify for the scholarship, students must be formally admitted to UNLV, pursuing their first bachelor's degree, enrolled in at least nine credits, have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 or higher and demonstrate compelling personal and financial need.

Exchange program seeks host families

Host families are being sought to share their family with high school students from around the world. Exchange students learn first-hand about the American family, school and their community. Families are being sought by two nonprofit companies.

Old fashioned event centered on dancing

An old time barn dance is planned with the Southern Nevada Old Time Contra Dancers for 7 p.m. Saturday at the Charleston Heights Arts Center Ballroom, 800 S. Brush St. There will be callers and live fiddlin' music for square dancing, mixers, contras, waltzes and polkas.

Free dance lessons are given at 6:30 p.m. No partner or experience is needed. The event will be held next month as well, slated for 7 to 10 p.m. July 22.

Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for members, or $3 for students, active military and children. For more information, call 229-6383.

Splash Box Derby set for Saturday

The city of Las Vegas announces its annual Splash Box Derby will be held Saturday at the Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive. Check-in begins at 5 p.m. The "away all boats" call will be at 6:15 p.m.

Refreshments will be available for purchase. Fees are $7 per creation entry and $1 for spectators. For more information, call 229-6309.

Annual reunion blood drive coming up

The third annual Summer High School reunion blood drive is planned for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 1 at Veterans Memorial Leisure Service Center, 101 Pavilion Center Drive. The pavilion is next to Palo Verde High School.

The entire community is invited to give the gift of life. Free movie tickets, Papa John's pizza, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, T-shirts and other gifts will be available for supporting the community blood bank.

Girl Scouts setting up Kyle Canyon camp

Registration for resident camp at Kyle Canyon is now being taken by Girl Scouts of Frontier Council, 2941 Harris Ave. Dates, locations, fees and activities vary. Fees range from $185 to $255. Both Girl Scout members and nonmembers are invited.

Charleston Heights to host dance camp

A youth dance camp is planned for 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 10-28 at Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 South Brush St. Registration is being taken through July 7.

The three-week camp is intended for intermediate to advanced dancers, ages 12-18.
