Burruto said he felt a burst of air and realized he was pinned between his city work truck and the driver's red Pontiac. He said he had a sensation of walking in clouds, and when he opened his eyes, he was asked if he knew where he was.

For the past 15 years, Southern Nevada homebuyers -- whether in Clark County, Las Vegas, Henderson or Boulder City -- indirectly have supported the creation and operation of the Desert Tortoise Conservation Center in the far southwest part of the Las Vegas Valley.

For each acre of disturbed land, developers must pay $550 into a special fund for the maintenance and upkeep of the facility that houses the largest reptile in the Southwest.

If the speed of life were measured in frames per second, we'd experience it like videotape -- 24 frames per second. When we speak, however, the English language slows things down to between four and eight frames per second.

But those with dyslexia don't slow down. They live in a world where they experience life at 30 frames per second, nonstop. It's the main reason they have trouble paying attention at home, in social settings and especially in school.

In what could easily have been mistaken for the filming of an action flick, the North Las Vegas Police Department, along with the Collision Safety Institute and the Accident Reconstruction Network, recently held its fourth annual Crash Conference, kicking it off with a series of controlled collisions at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

During the 10 smash-ups, professional stunt driver Rusty Haight conducted crashes using a variety of vehicles, including a motor home, a compact car, a mid-sized sedan, a motorcycle and a North Las Vegas Fire Department fire engine.

Memorial Day weekend is typically a time to remember and honor the troops that support our country, but this year, drivers, fans and family of the late Spencer Clark paid tribute to the 19-year-old North Las Vegas resident who was killed along with a teammate in a car accident outside of Albuquerque, N.M., on May 21.

For those with Internet access, there's no more need to run to City Hall to pick up a meeting agenda. The city clerk's office has placed all those documents on the Internet using Agenda Manager software that allows access to the same information seen by the council.

"The Agenda Manager package is a license for five meeting types such as the city council, the redevelopment agency and the planning commission with the next two being parks and recreation and the airport advisory committee," City Clerk Pamella Malmstrom said. "Eventually, we'll purchase another license for five meeting types and have all the rest of them on the Internet."
