FENCING

Amanda Marks takes top prize in foil, saber

At the recent awards ceremony following the final event of this year's Las Vegas Cup fencing tournament in April, Amanda Marks, 12, was named Las Vegas Cup Champion in both Youth 12 and Under Women's Foil and Youth 12 and Under Women's Saber.

Amanda, who trains at Red Rock Fencing Center, 8665 W. Flamingo Road, No. 117, and has been fencing since 2002, has won the Las Vegas Cup in foil in her age group since the competition's inception three years ago. This year, the six-series tournament, which draws fencers from five area clubs, added saber and epee events and Amanda, who also added saber to her arsenal of weapons this year, clinched the saber title as well as the foil.

"Both saber and foil use right of way rules, so there is some crossover," Amanda said, adding that in her opinion, the two are easier to combine than foil and epee. "Epee does not have right of way, so you really have to change your mind set."

Amanda still considers foil her primary weapon and in January she was dubbed the United States Fencing Association's Pacific Coast Youth 12 Women's Foil Fencer of the Year. The sixth-grader has qualified and competed in the 2005 Summer Nationals Championships in foil and competed at the 2006 North American Cup in foil and saber. She is training in both weapons for the upcoming Summer Nationals, to be held in Atlanta in July.
