Instructor teaches swimming lessons to young children

Lake Mead National Recreation Area officials have reported five confirmed drownings this year. As a result, area agencies are encouraging water safety for both children and adults.

"Knowing safety skills would help a lot (in preventing these deaths)," said Cathy Siegel-Craven, who offers private swimming lessons through the city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. Siegel-Craven instructs children as young as 6 months the importance of water safety.

High school athletes/scholars honored at event

Thirty-three athletes considered the most talented and intelligent in the Clark County School District were recognized at the fifth annual Celebration of Young Women Athletes held May 25 at Texas Station.

The honorees, accompanied by coaches and parents, each received a certificate of accomplishment, a plaque, and a year's membership at the Las Vegas Athletic Club, which hosted the event.
