Clark County residents are invited to propose a name for a new female desert tortoise that will live at the Clark County Government Center. County commissioners will select the winning name based on its suitability for the tortoise.
Entrants should submit their name, phone number and suggested tortoise name to the Clark County Department of Air Quality and Environmental Management front desk on the first floor at 500 S. Grand Central Parkway. Entries may be made in person or mailed in.
All county residents are eligible to participate. Entries must be received by June 30.
The winner will receive a gift basket and be publicly recognized when the new tortoise habitat is completed later this summer.
Summer class registration will begin today and end July 23 for classes offered at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St.; the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave.; Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. N.; and the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd.
Classes are offered in painting, ceramics, dance, instrumental and vocal music, theater and Spanish and African cultural arts and more.
The 12th annual Red, White N' Boom will be held July 3 and 4 at Desert Breeze Park, 8275 Spring Mountain Road, from 4 to 11 p.m.
The outdoor music festival presented by Wayne Jefferies Presents and Clark County Parks and Recreation will feature: Social Distortion, Flogging Molly, Seether, Saving Jane and Fletch on July 3; and Train, Blue October, Ne-Yo, Colin Hay of Men at Work, Jacks Mannequin and Away Station on July 4.
Tickets are on sale at all Ticketmaster outlets. One-day admission is $17.50 per person when purchased in advance and $22 at the gate, children 12 and under are admitted free. Special two-day passes can be purchased in advance for $30, and a limited number of two-day VIP passes are available for $150 per person. VIP passes include special parking and seating in an air-conditioned area, free food and nonalcoholic drinks and discounts on alcoholic beverages.
Those attending are allowed to bring one bottle of water per person and blankets. Food, beverages and chairs are not allowed.
A Summer Cool Off day will be held July 8 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Spring Mountain Ranch State Park, 10 miles west of the Las Vegas Beltway on Charleston Boulevard.
Attendees will receive free ice cream and lemonade on a first come first serve basis.
The park entrance fee is $6 per vehicle. Those interested should meet at the ranch house garage.

Wine and art event planned at venue
A free festival featuring a wine tasting and a showing of art is scheduled for 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday at Hofbrauhaus, 4510 Paradise Road.
Cast and crew members from the Stardust shows will attend the festival, and tickets will be on sale for a cast and crew reunion planned for Sept. 10 at the Stardust to help it celebrate five decades of entertainment.
The Rosel Seastrand Arts Foundation will present "7 Brides for 7 Brothers" at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Saturday, Monday and June 21-24 at the Summerlin Library Theater, 1771 Inner Circle Drive. A 2 p.m. showing on Saturday also is scheduled.
Tickets are $12 for adults, and $8 for seniors and children under age 12.
Proceeds will benefit James Seastrand Helping Hands of North Las Vegas, a senior assistance program.

Program to teach kids about theater
The Las Vegas Little Theatre, 3920 Schiff Drive, announced a Summer Children's Theatre Workshop for ages 6 to 16 beginning July 11.
Sessions run from 4 6 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, with the addition of rehearsals on Saturdays in August.
The theater will host an in-person registration from 4 8 p.m. on July 10.
Topics of the workshop will include stage dynamics, theater lingo, listening skills, articulation skills, makeup magic, lighting, props, sets, improvisation techniques and theater games.
The cost is $20 per week, or $120 for the entire seven-week session. All classes and performances will be held at the theater.
The workshop will culminate in an August production at the Las Vegas Little Theatre.
