Goddesses awarded for community effort
The AFL's Las Vegas Gladiator Goddesses were recently honored by two local government entities for their support to the community.
Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman proclaimed April 29 as 2006 AFL Las Vegas Gladiators Goddesses Day in acknowledgement for the team's accomplishments and contributions to the community.
May 6, the North Las Vegas Police Department presented a certificate of appreciation to the Goddesses in recognition of their support and valued contribution to the third annual Elizondo Charity Softball Tournament, held earlier in the spring.
The Goddesses perform free of charge for nonprofit organizations.

Boyack's accepting camp registrations
Boyack's Dance Attack, with studios on both sides of town offering classes in jazz, ballet, hip-hop, tumbling, performing teams and more, is currently accepting registration for the following summer dance camps: BDA Boogie Dance Camp West (ages 5-17), July 24-26; BDA Boogie Dance Camp Green Valley (ages 6-14), July 27-29; and BDA Dance Clinic (ages 5-17), Aug. 9-12.

NYFL holds sign-ups for tackle teams
The Nevada Youth Football League is holding registration for full contact football for the fall 2006 season. Registration can be conducted at the league office at 1651 S. Buffalo Drive from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturdays.
When signing up, participants must have either player ID cards from the NYFL or original birth certificates and their parents' utility bills.
For the Youth Division, ages 6-14, registration costs $160, with payment in cash or money order only.
Players must be present for weigh-in and accompanied by a parent.
Practice starts the first week in August, with games running from September to mid-November.

GOLF
MVCS athlete named Player of the Year
Mountain View Christian School sophomore Kris Sorensen was named the Nevada Class 1A/2A Player of the Year in golf.
Sorensen finished second in the state tournament this year, just three strokes off the individual state winner.
In five league matches this spring, Sorensen had one first place, three second-place and one third-place finish along with an impressive 76.8 stroke average per 18 holes.
Classic honors late Nevada governor
The 13th annual Cure Asthma Golf Classic, scheduled for June 13 at Cascata Golf Club, 1 Cascata Drive in Boulder City, is named in honor of the late Nevada Governor Mike O'Callaghan and presented by Cox Communications.
The event supports the projects and programs of National Jewish Medical and Research Center, ranked the nation's No. 1 respiratory hospital for eight consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report.
O'Callaghan was the first National Jewish honoree and Trustee in Las Vegas in 1972.
Entry packages for the shotgun start, scramble format, non-mulligan tournament begin at $750 per golfer or $3,000 per foursome and include greens fees, golf cart, tee gifts, breakfast and lunch.

Las Vegas High-Rollers forming new team
The National Roller Derby League is forming the Las Vegas High-Rollers. NFC Tabagators holding sign-ups
NFC Tabagators Youth Soccer Academy is having open registration for its fall season for boys and girls ages 4-10.
No tryouts are needed and players will be placed on a team in their area.

MVCS's Glover repeats as Player of the Year
Mountain View Christian School junior Kaitlin Glover was named the Nevada Class 1A softball Player of the Year for a second straight year.
Summer Slam set for Mesquite on Saturday
The North American Sports Federation will host its fifth annual Nevada Summer Slam Softball tournament in Mesquite on Saturday.
There is a four-game guarantee with prizes and awards being given to the top six teams.
Mizuno Sports will be awarding bat bags, players jackets and fielders gloves to the tournament champions.
The Oasis, 897 W. Mesquite Blvd., is the host hotel and will offer a special $39 room rate for tourney participants.

TRACK & FIELD
Youth invited to free Hershey's meet
Hershey's Track and Field Youth Program and the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invite Nevada boys and girls ages 9-14 to participate in a free regional qualifying open track meet on Wednesday at the Western High School track, 4601 W. Bonanza Road.
Registration will be held on site from 5 to 5:45 p.m., with the events beginning at 6 p.m.
Youth will compete in three age groups -- 9 to 10, 11 to 12 and 13 to 14 -- with age determined by the participant's age on Dec. 31.
Events include the 50-, 100-, 200-, 400-, 800- and 1,600-meter dash, 4x100-meter relay, standing long jump and softball throw.
Times and distances will be compared with Northern Nevada, California, Hawaii, Utah and Arizona results to determine composition of the regional team.
Those selected as regional representatives will receive an all-expense paid trip to Hershey, Pa., to compete in the North American Final Meet Aug. 3-6.
Additional wheelchair events will be offered to youth with disabilities ages 9 to 14. A copy of each participant's birth certificate must be submitted at registration as proof of age.
