Taking it to the streets
Lummis students give walking to school a try

It was called the Lummis Walking School Bus, but it wasn't a bus at all.
May 8-12 was Walk to School Week and Lummis Elementary students were encouraged to use their feet to get to school. Children from nearby neighborhoods were invited to meet in a common area, such as the entrance to their development, then were escorted to school by an adult.

Local students get a better view of Rubens paintings at Guggenheim Hermitage

They came excited to be on a school field trip. They left with a new appreciation for art.
On May 10, the Contact! Museum School Tour program arranged for more than 60 fifth-graders from Reed Elementary School to tour the Guggenheim Hermitage Museum and view its latest exhibition, Rubens and His Age: Masterpieces from the Hermitage Museum.

Horticulturist, community leader dies at 87

The roots planted by Aggie Roberts run deep through the Las Vegas Valley.
As a horticulturist, First Communion teacher for several Diocese of Las Vegas parishes and an activist for children, Roberts touched nearly everyone with whom she came into contact. She died May 16 at age 87.

Trio turns focus away from the plot for sci-fi film entry

An unnerving mad scientist sort, a baby's cries, a customer admiring what seems to be his cloned creature, and gun shots, heard but not seen.
These are some of the elements of North Las Vegas resident Josh Meeter's short film "Synthetica," an entry in the 2006 CineVegas Film Festival. The eighth annual event will begin Friday and run through June 17 at the Palms.

Throwing in the towel
City's aquatics center coordinator retires after 21 years

Officially, June 19 is her last day, but two days from now, when the city's workweek ends, Aquatics Center Coordinator Stana Hurlburt will be a fish out of water.
After more than 21 years working in the city's Aquatics and Racquetball Center -- the last seven heading up the Central Park, soon to be Broadbent Park, facility -- the 56-year-old woman who once was a Malibu Beach lifeguard in sunny Southern California is turning in her whistle and visor Thursday afternoon.

Former dancers to descend on Stardust for yearly reunion

Back in the day, getting this group of women together in one room would probably lead to a whole lot of twisting, turning, shaking and grooving.
Today and Wednesday at the Stardust, Jane Briggeman, founder of the Golden Days of Burlesque Historical Society, is hoping to re-ignite a little of that performance fire during the group's annual reunion for old-time burlesque dancers.

Centennial shop sells emergency preparation gear

Walking into the Battle Born Tactical and Survival Gear store and seeing large containers of food on the shelves, camouflage gear hanging from the walls and the latest disaster movie playing on a big screen TV might make some people nervous.
"We like to have fun with it," said co-owner Joe Martin. "This really isn't for people to be scared. We want everyone to have emergency supplies."
