BGCLV to hold its first basketball camp
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas presents its first-ever basketball camp to be held Saturday at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 S. Lindell Road. The camp begins this Saturday and runs through Aug. 12. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
The camp is free for boys and girls ages 7 to 12 and limited to the first 150 participants. Each camper receives a camp T-shirt, individual and group instruction and lunch. Youth may register at their local club.

Free Hoops for Hope Camp to tip off in July
Top college basketball players will teach game fundamentals to boys and girls ages 11 to 14 who enroll in a free camp to be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. from July 19 to 21 at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 J. St.
Attendees will be coached by D-1 basketball players from the universities of Southern Utah, Tennessee, Pepperdine, Coastal Carolina, Washington and San Diego State, as well as by former UNLV players.
The camp includes a T-shirt, a water bottle, a sports bag, a daily breakfast snack and lunch.
Parents of basketball camp participants are invited to a free workshop on July 21 to learn ways to enhance youth nutrition and activities and how to prepare for college basketball recruiters and other college opportunities.

Green Valley High School will take applications for its 2006 Green Valley Boys Basketball Camp to be held from 10 a.m. to noon Monday through July 21.

NYFL seeks players for tackle teams
The Nevada Youth Football League is holding registration for full contact football for the fall season.
Registration can be conducted from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday at the league office at 1651 S. Buffalo Drive.
When signing up, participants must have either a player ID cards from the NYFL or original birth certificates and utility bills.
For the Youth Division, ages 6 to 14, registration costs $180, with payment in cash or money order only. Players must be present for weigh-in and accompanied by a parent. Practice starts the first week in August, with games running from September to mid-November.

Church group to tee off
Holy Apostles Council 12543 will hold its second annual golf outing on Saturday at Painted Desert Golf Club, 5555 Painted Mirage Road. Check-in for the tournament begins at 7 a.m. and the tourney tees off at 7:30 a.m. and will be played in the four-person scrabble format. The cost is $80 per person and fees include greens fees, cart, unlimited range balls, tees, wet towels and a cooler with ice and a bottle of water. Ladies Golf Clinic to be held in August
LPGA teaching professional Kristin Sunderhaft will conduct Ladies Golf Clinics in August, covering all areas of the game, for all skill levels, at the Callaway Golf Center, 6730 S. Las Vegas Blvd.
Session I (Monday) will begin July 31 and run every Monday through Aug. 21. Session II (Saturday), begins Aug. 5 and runs through Aug. 26. Both sessions will be held from 8 to 9 a.m. The cost is $160 per student and space is limited so register soon.

Students bring home the medals
Local kungfu school, Shaolin Kungfu Chan, located at 4480 W. Spring Mountain Road, Suite No. 500, competed in International Martial Arts Tournament in San Jose, Calif., on June 18 with nine students bringing home 11 gold and seven silver medals and one bronze medal. Teacher and coach, Shi Xing Wei is a 32nd-generation Shaolin Master from the Shaolin Temple in the Henan Province of China. The school's students also participated in the USA World Championships held June 30 through July 2 at the Riviera Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas.
The Las Vegas Track Club will host the 30th annual Notch Run, dubbed "The fastest 4-Miler in the World," on Saturday The race begins at 7 a.m. on the course which begins on Mt. Charleston at the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort and finishes four miles down the mountain at Mack's Canyon. All runners will be bused to the finish area after the race.
The cost of the race is $20 for LVTC members, $23 for non-LVTC members and $15 for youth (19 and younger) runners. Henderson senior season on tap
The Henderson Senior Softball League's Summer 2 Season is under way and the league is looking for players ages 40 and older who would like to participate.
Brittany Hanna, a recent graduate of Coronado High School, accepted a scholarship to play tennis at Rockhurst University in Kansas City, Mo., in the fall. Hanna, who went undefeated in regular-season play for the Cougars, played for Coronado's 2003 state championship team and was the team's captain her junior year. Hanna has also been a nationally ranked tennis player over the past six years.
She graduated with high honors, is on the National Honor roll and is a member of the National Society for High Schoolers. Hanna also appears in the current issues of "Who's Who Among American High School Students" and "Who's Who Among American High School Students," "Sports Edition."
Locals thrive at Summer Sectionals
Top Intermountain juniors competed June 12 through 17 in the USTA Intermountain Summer Sectional Championship held in Boise, Idaho with several players from Southern Nevada winning or finishing second in their age groups in singles play.
Winning the Boys 18s championship was Las Vegas' Ryan Gormley; finishing second in the Boys 14s was Las Vegan Jeff Vongman; winning the Boys 12s was Brendan Aguilar, who defeated Henderson's Nicholas Mahlangu, 6-2, 6-3 in the title match.
In girls singles play, Asia Muhammad of Henderson won the Girls 18s championship while Kimberly Yee of Las Vegas captured the Girls 12 singles title in straight sets.
VOLLEYBALL
GVHS set to hold women's camp
Green Valley High School women's volleyball program will hold a volleyball camp Aug. 8 through 11. The camp, to be held in the high school's gym at 460 Arroyo Grande Blvd. and will run from 9 a.m. to noon. Grades three through 12 are invited to participate.
The price is $125 and includes 12 hours of instruction, a T-shirt, a backpack, a water bottle, a towel and a leather volleyball.
