NLV police boost campaign to keep kids on up and up

As the North Las Vegas Police Department's community services division recently prepared to kick off the first in a series of summer and fall pilot programs, officers weren't the only ones hoping the efforts would have positive ramifications for the future.

Youth interested in participating in one of two sessions of the Gang Resistance Education and Training (GREAT) program's summer installment were required to write a short explanation dealing with why they should be selected to participate.

A benefit for all
Fundraising event honors group, celebs, future stars

The stars were shining brightly on May 13 when <a href="http://VegasTennis.com">VegasTennis.com</a> and the Marty Hennessy Junior Tennis Foundation held a benefit dinner and fundraiser in honor of Tony Bennett's 80th birthday at The Stirling Club in Turnberry Place.

Driven by the simple mantra, "Changing kids' lives through tennis and education," the foundation raised more than $300,000 with the help of celebrities and dignitaries, such as Bennett, Frankie Avalon, Phyllis McGuire, Mike Agassi, Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger, Tennis Channel founder Steve Bellamy, Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt, Las Vegas City Councilman Larry Brown and "The Tonight Show" host Jay Leno, who surprised the crowd when he played waiter and rolled out a birthday cake for Bennett.
