Display at Charleston Heights opens Friday

California artist Laura Kleger's color photographs from her Neighborhood Watch and Patriot Memory series will be in an exhibition titled Home Front, starting Friday and running through April 2 at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St.

The artist considers the social landscape -- both public and private -- in post-Sept. 11 America in these photographic works.

Gallery hours are from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. weekends.

The center will host an artist reception for the public from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m., Feb. 9, with a gallery talk about the works at 7 p.m.

Admission is free.

Singers needed for Mozart's 'Requiem'

The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society, now in its 43rd season, is accepting members for all voice parts.

Dehner Franks Quartet to give concert

Producer Joanne Gilbert announces a jazz concert 3-5 p.m. Feb. 12 at Sun City Summerlin's Starbright Theater. The theater is located at the Pinnacle Community Center, 2215 Thomas Ryan Blvd.

Spend an afternoon listening to the Dehner Franks Quartet.

Rudner tapped as Woman of the Year

Nevada Ballet Theatre plans its Black & White Ball Jan. 28 in the Latour Ballroom at Wynn Las Vegas.

The main event will commence at 6:30 p.m. with dinner at 7:30 p.m.

This year's Woman of the Year award goes to Rita Rudner, headliner at the New York-New York.

"Rita Rudner was a natural choice for Nevada Ballet Theatre's Woman of the Year," said Nancy Houssels co-founder and chairwoman of Nevada Ballet Theatre. "She is a former dancer and is a favorite Las Vegas performer and resident."

Sponsored by Cartier and Wells Fargo, Nevada Ballet Theatre's Black & White Ball will feature a three-course gourmet menu.

Emcee is David Brenner and 12 professional company members from the ballet will perform a Bob Fosse number.

Tables prices are $5,000 Gold, $10,000 Platinum and $25,000 Diamond. The Diamond table will include a private reception at 6:30 p.m. with Rudner and other celebrities. The reception will be hosted by Elaine Wynn.

Nathan Adelson Hospice to offer course

A volunteer education course providing tools and resources to help people who care for terminally ill patients is being offered from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. beginning Saturday and continuing Jan. 28 and Feb. 4 at 4131 Swenson St.

Participants must be able to attend all three days. There is no charge for the class.

Library offers magic potions class

The North Las Vegas Library is holding a class on creation of magic potions, like the ones used in the Harry Potter book series.

The free class will be at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 28 at the North Las Vegas Library, 2300 Civic Center Drive.

Mayor to lead power walk at senior center

The city of Las Vegas invites adults ages 50 and older to join Mayor Oscar Goodman for a free fitness power walk slated for Jan. 31 at the Doolittle Senior Center, 1950 N. J St.

Participants should meet at at the center's entrance at 8 a.m. A continental breakfast will be provided.

"Fitness is important for people of all ages, especially seniors," Goodman said. "I encourage our seniors to participate in this walk to help them get on the right track to good health."

Comfortable shoes and clothing are recommended.

Reservations are not necessary.

Jazzercise classes offered in Summerlin

Three locations in Summerlin are offering Jazzercise classes seven days a week. Jazzercise blends easy-to-follow aerobic routines, yoga, Pilates and kickboxing movements into fun dance routines done to music.

AARP Summerlin Chapter 5094's monthly meeting is set for 6:30 p.m. Monday at West Sahara Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave.

The speaker will be Marilyn Wills, director of State Health Insurance Agency from the State Department of Aging. The subject will be complexities of the current prescription program.
