I congratulate you on your article "Hollywood Jack Davison's craps feat immortalized in downtown Las Vegas" (Summerlin South View, Jan. 4). You captured the atmosphere of those old days at the Shoe. Jack is a colorful character and although I did not witness the historic event, I have shot craps with him many times at the quarter game at the Shoe.
I also thought the article on Tony Salinas, "Gambling man: Las Vegan widely recognized for handicap talent" (Southwest View, Aug. 10, 2005) hit very close to his persona around town, especially the sports book and the VIP football contests.
This gives the View a lot more credibility in my eyes than some of the "news" I see from the about-town columnists. As an adjunct to the story on 'Hollywood' Jack, the California has an exclusive Golden Arm club for shooters that exceed one hour.
The behind-the-scenes stories just at the Horseshoe would make for good reading. I'm happy for Jack that he got the press coverage and his claim to fame memorialized in the form of a plaque at the Horseshoe.

Kudos for community reporting
I live in North Las Vegas and I just wanted to say thank you for the neighborhood news. I don't get out much because of a stroke and your paper can get me up to date on local activities.
Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks to all of you at the View.
Happy New Year.

Teen service attitude should be contagious
I especially appreciate your articles telling the positive work of our precious teenagers. News on TV and daily papers are quick to report the negative sensationalism of our teens. Maybe if students were inspired by the reporting of the good that so many of them are doing, they would consider helping the community and experience the joy of sharing their own many talents.
Congratulations on your article "A Day of Service" (Summerlin South View, Jan. 4) about the students at Faith Lutheran Middle School. It is a really inspiring story; maybe other schools will be challenged to a morning of service by their students.
The faculty at Faith Lutheran is to be admired and thanked for helping students to apply what they are taught about getting out and doing good in the community. They seem to be learning to connect the mind with the heart, and that can be catching!
