Tareon J. Lofton, a 2003 graduate of Eldorado High School, has accepted membership into the Golden Key International Honour Society and was recognized during a recent induction ceremony at Tennessee State University.

Golden Key International Honour Society, a global nonprofit organization, provides academic recognition to college juniors and seniors in the top 15 percent of their class.

The organization provides leadership development opportunities, community service, career networking and scholarships.

Lofton plans to graduate in August 2007 with a degree in medical technology. She's considering getting a master's degree in epidemiology, and is hoping to work for the Centers for Disease Control. She is the daughter of Marvin King and Sonya King Hill of Las Vegas.

Pvt. Michaela Wilkinson has completed recruit training at the Marine Corp Recruit Depot in Parris Island, S.C.

Pooh on the non-pooper scoopers

Shame on all of the Summerlin dog owners who fail to clean up after their dogs. I live in close proximity to Ober Elementary School and Willows Park. On any given day, there are in excess of 10 new piles of dog waste (on either side of the street) in front of the school and in the park. Dog waste is not only unsightly, but also draws flies and contaminates the ground water. Summerlin provides dog waste bags and convenient disposal containers throughout the neighborhoods. Our landscaping contractors are not responsible for cleaning up dog waste, it is the dog owner's responsibilty. Get off to a good start for the new year, make one of your resolutions to always clean up after your dog.

View welcomes proclamations of Las Vegas residents who go above and beyond the call of duty to lend a hand to a group or individual. If you know of a friend, relative, neighbor or co-worker who has pitched in to help make the community a better, safer or more comfortable place to live, write and tell us about it. Send good deed letters and photos by mail to: Lynn Benson, View, P.O. Box 70, Las Vegas, NV 89125-0070; by e-mail, referencing Good Deeds in the subject line, to viewcalendars@viewnews.com.

Hale Lane law firm and Candlelighters for Childhood Cancer of Southern Nevada teamed up to adopt a northwest Las Vegas family of five to give them a special Christmas through the Adopt a Family program, which matches business and community partners with needy families.

The family has an 8-year-old daughter with leukemia and needed extra help this Christmas season.

The employees of Hale Lane contributed items on the family's wish list and dropped off a Christmas tree and gifts for the family, including a computer, a bike, a wagon, toys, clothing and gift cards.
