ART

Local painter featured at Liberty Pointe

The paintings of local artist Ellen Nelson will be featured in an exhibition at The Gallery at Liberty Pointe, opening Monday and running through Feb. 10. The gallery is located inside the Henderson Multigenerational Center at 250 S. Green Valley Parkway. Admission is free.

The gallery also will host a free public reception for the artist at 7 p.m. Jan. 11 where visitors can meet Nelson and learn about her work and technique. The reception and exhibit are sponsored by the city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.

AUDITIONS

Goddesses host Pom Girls tryouts

The Arena Football League's Las Vegas Gladiators dance team, the Gladiator Goddesses, will host tryouts for the Pom Girls, a spirit and pom-pom team.

Tryouts will be from 7-10 p.m. Jan. 25 at Gustav Mauler's Sazio restaurant in The Orleans, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave.

Judging will be based on appearance, spirit, dancing skill, audience appeal and communication skills.

Coat, clothes drive set for Jan. 9-13

Catholic Charities and Village East Cleaners will hold its 12th Annual Clothing Drive to benefit Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada, Monday through Jan. 13.

A free cup of coffee and donuts will be provided for coats and clothing donated on Monday before 9 a.m. Edward Los, general manager of Village East Cleaners, located at 1760 W. Horizon Ridge Parkway, offers cleaning services for any garment to be donated to Catholic Charities.

Coats and clothing items will be given to the men, women and children seeking assistance from Catholic Charities.

YOUTH

Checkers tournament set for Saturday

The Silver Springs Recreation Center, 1951 Silver Springs Parkway, will host a checkers tournament for youth from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday. Enrollment is free for participants ages 8-11, but a participant ID card is required and early registration is recommended.

The tournament is sponsored by the city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department. The event is the first in a series of monthly game tournaments for youth. Each month will feature a different game, such as pool, ping-pong or Connect Four. The environment is non-competitive, but rankings are kept of frequent players using a ladder system to encourage regular participation.

SEMINAR

Apple and pear tree care discussed

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will sponsor a seminar on how to manage apples, pears and quince.

All the basics will be covered including what kind of fertilizers to use and when, controlling pests of stone fruit, pruning and thinning techniques and water management.

The seminar will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the UNCE Learning Center, 2590 Lindell Road.

There will be a pruning demonstration at 8 a.m. Jan. 11, at the Master Gardeners Orchard, 4400 Horse Road, North Las Vegas.
