ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT

Free quality of life catalog offered

The Don Krebs Access To Recreation catalog, a publication of equipment designed to improve the quality of life for disabled Americans, is available for no charge for those who are interested.

Adaptive equipment is a specialized item, that because of its design allows a person with the use of one arm to cut their food, an electric page-turning device for readers whose hands are immobilized and tools for gardeners with weakness of the arms.

All of the previously mentioned items are available in a 63-page catalog of adaptive sports and recreation equipment. In addition, the catalog contains modified fishing gear, a rifle trigger activator for sportsmen with reduced finger dexterity, assistive golfing implements and a variety of portable wheelchair ramps.

Big League Baseball seeking players

Nevada District 4 is starting a Big League Baseball division for boys ages 16-18 after the 2006 high school season has ended and is seeking players, coaches and sponsors.

Paseo Verde league holding registration

Paseo Verde Little League has scheduled registration for the spring baseball season for children ages 5-15, which will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21 and Jan. 28 at Dos Escuelas Park, 1 Golden View in Henderson.

New players should bring a copy of their birth certificate and proof of residency or a utility bill. Fees are $80 for T-ball and $100 for other divisions.

Paradise Valley starting season

Spring sign-ups for Paradise Valley Little League baseball will be held at the Paradise Park Recreation Center, 4775 McLeod Road, from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Jan. 14; from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Jan. 18; from 10:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. on Jan. 21; and from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on Jan. 25.

T-ball registration is open to children ages 5-7 and costs $80. For all other divisions, ages 7-16, the cost is $100.

YMCA to hold Hoyas Academy

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is accepting sign-ups for Hoyas Basketball Academy.

Headed by former UNLV and NBA players Robert Smith and Sam Smith, the academy focuses on everything from fundamentals to advanced game execution. Boys and girls ages 8-15 are welcome. The academy runs from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The cost is $79 per month.

CHEERLEADING

Goddesses to hold POM GIRL tryouts

The Arena Football League's Las Vegas Gladiators dance team, the Gladiator Goddesses, will be holding tryouts for the POM GIRLS, a spirit and pom-pom team, from 7-10 p.m. on Jan 25 at the Sazio restaurant in The Orleans, 4500 W. Tropicana Ave.

The Goddesses created the newly formed dance spirit team to cheer on the Gladiators and inspire fans during home games at the Thomas & Mack Center.

The team is looking for energetic dancers, cheerleaders and spirit girls, 18 years and older, to cheer from the stands and interact with fans in their seats at all eight Gladiators home games in 2006.

The Goddesses also will look to the POM GIRLS members for future recruits.

In addition to game-day activities, the POM GIRLS also will participate in the Goddesses Power Dance Camp on April 2, that will culminate with an on-field performance during the halftime show at the Gladiators game against the Los Angeles Avengers.

Judging will be based on five categories: appearance, spirit, dancing skill, audience appeal and communication skills.

Preregistration is encouraged.

All applicants need to come dressed to perform with full makeup and hair, jazz shoes, shorts, bare midriffs and light-colored fishnets or bare legs. A valid photo ID is required.

FENCING

Fencing Academy to host tournament

The Fencing Academy of Nevada will kick off the new year by hosting the inaugural Las Vegas Cup Youth Foil Fencing Tournament at 11 a.m. on Sunday at its facility at the Las Vegas Sports Park, 1400 N. Rampart Blvd.

This tournament is the fencing season's first of six in a series of tournaments held for Nevada Division youth fencers in age groups Youth 10, Youth 12 and Youth 14.

Fencers will have the opportunity to fence electrically using scoring machines and metallic fencing strips like those used nationally and at the Olympic games.

All Nevada youth fencers are encouraged to compete to gain experience locally and for future national level competitions.

Seven headed to Junior Olympics

Seven fencers from the Fencing Academy of Nevada qualified for the Junior Olympics to be held in February in Hartford, Conn.

James Stewart (The Meadows School), Dakota Root (home-schooled), Naryan Pahti (Bishop Gorman), Reggie Korolkov (Rancho), Rachel Finney (The Meadows School), Kian Ameli (Palo Verde) and Nik-Nik Ameli (The Meadows School) will represent the Nevada division in eight events in the four-day tournament.

FOOTBALL

WASUP holding new registration

The Western Athletic Sports Unified Program (WASUP) will be holding sign-ups for its NFL Youth Flag Football League for boys and girls ages 6-17 at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road in Henderson on the following days and times: from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday; from 6-9 p.m. on Jan. 11; and from 10 a .m.-6 p.m. on Jan 14.

The cost is $85 per child ages 6-14, and $95 per child ages 15-17 and includes full uniform.

Gladiators holding free scrimmage

The Las Vegas Gladiators will host the Arizona Rattlers in a free, pre-season scrimmage at the Thomas & Mack Center on 2 p.m. on Jan. 16. The scrimmage will be open to the public, allowing fans the first opportunity to see the Gladiators in action during the 2006 season.

Takefuji Classic seeking volunteers

For the fourth straight year, the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) will be holding the Takefuji Classic at the Las Vegas Country Club, set for April 10-15. All the event has begun its search for volunteers who will receive a badge good for admission all week plus an extra clubhouse badge worth $50.

Daily lunch will be provided and for every day of volunteering, participants will receive a entry into the volunteer drawing. Most committees have a uniform fee of $25 for a cap or visor and golf shirt.

Honda Riders Club meets Saturdays

Las Vegas Desert Rider's Club, the local chapter of the Honda Riders Club of America, meets at 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month at Carter Powersports, 3535 W. Tropicana Ave. All motorcyle riders are welcome to join. Dues are $20 annually for the club and include monthly rides, bonus rides, patches, membership cards and discounts on motorcycles, ATV's, parts, accessories and apparel.
