Western Little League will be holding registrations for the 2006 spring baseball season at Copeland Sports in the Best in the West Shopping Plaza, 2178 N. Rainbow Blvd.
Registrations are scheduled for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Jan. 14, Jan. 21 and Jan. 28.
Sign-ups also will be held from 5:30-8 p.m. on Jan. 17 at the Doc Romeo Sports Complex Snack Bar at Cheyenne Road and Tenaya Way behind the Rainbow Library.
Fees are $80 for T-ball (ages 5-6), $90 for Rookie/Coach Pitch (ages 7-8), and $110 for Minor (ages 9-12), Major (ages 9-12), Junior (ages 13-14), Senior (ages 14-16) and Big League Baseball (ages 17-18).
League boundaries are south of Alexander Road, north of Washington Street, east of Rampart Boulevard and west of Rancho Drive.
Nevada District 4 is starting a Big League Baseball division for boys ages 16 to 18 after the 2006 high school season has ended and is seeking players, coaches and sponsors.

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is accepting sign-ups for Hoyas Basketball Academy.
Headed by former UNLV and NBA players Robert Smith and Sam Smith, the academy focuses on everything from fundamentals to advanced game execution.

FENCING
Fencing Academy to host tournament
The Fencing Academy of Nevada will kick off the new year by hosting the inaugural Las Vegas Cup Youth Foil Fencing Tournament at 11 a.m. on Sunday at its facility at the Las Vegas Sports Park, 1400 N. Rampart Blvd.
This tournament is the fencing season's first of six in a series held for Nevada Division youth fencers in age groups Youth 10, Youth 12 and Youth 14.
Fencers will have the opportunity to compete electronically using scoring machines and metallic fencing strips like those used nationally and at the Olympic games. All Nevada youth fencers are encouraged to compete to gain experience locally and for future national level competitions.

Fencers headed to Junior Olympics
Seven members of the Fencing Academy of Nevada qualified for the Junior Olympics to be held in February in Hartford, Conn.
James Stewart (The Meadows School), Dakota Root (home-schooled), Naryan Pahti (Bishop Gorman), Reggie Korolkov (Rancho), Rachel Finney (The Meadows School), Kian Ameli (Palo Verde) and Nik-Nik Ameli (The Meadows School) will represent the Nevada division in eight events in the four-day tournament.

WASUP plans new registration
The Western Athletic Sports Unified Program will be holding sign-ups for its NFL Youth Flag Football League for boys and girls ages 6 to 17 at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road in Henderson.
The dates are from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on Saturday; 6-9 p.m. on Jan. 11; and 10 a .m.-6 p.m. on Jan 14.

Gladiators to hold free scrimmage
The Las Vegas Gladiators will host the Arizona Rattlers in a free, pre-season scrimmage at the Thomas & Mack Center on 2 p.m. on Jan. 16.
The scrimmage will be open to the public, allowing fans the first opportunity to see the Gladiators in action during the 2006 season.

Takefuji Classic seeks volunteers
The Ladies Professional Golf Association will be holding the Takefuji Classic on April 10-15 at the Las Vegas Country Club.
The event has begun its search for volunteers who will receive a badge for admission all week plus an extra clubhouse badge worth $50.
Daily lunch will be provided, and for every day of volunteering, participants will receive an entry into the volunteer drawing. Most committees have a uniform fee of $25 for a cap or visor and golf shirt.
Las Vegas Desert Rider's Club, the local chapter of the Honda Riders Club of America, meets at 9 a.m. on the second Saturday of each month at Carter Powersports, 3535 W. Tropicana Ave.
All motorcyle riders are welcome to join. Dues are $20 annually for the club and include monthly rides, bonus rides, patches, membership cards and discounts on motorcycles, ATVs, parts, accessories and apparel.
The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services will be offering dozens of classes and activities at its community centers and schools.
There is a variety of options available, from sports leagues and exercise options to family fun events, after-school programs, educational workshops and leisure activities for all ages.
Registration for the six-week winter 2006 session will be open until Friday for classes that run from Monday through Feb. 18.

USTA names new service rep
The United States Tennis Association's Intermountain Section announced the hiring of David Dunson as one of its three new tennis service representatives.
Dunson started Nov. 1 and began formal training during the USTA national staff training held in Destin, Fla.
Dunson will try to increase participation in tennis in the Las Vegas area by promoting, developing and servicing tennis programs by establishing strong relationships with the local delivery system, including tennis and non-tennis facilities, organizations and volunteers.
Dunson was a player and a coach for the varsity men's tennis team at Hampton University in Hampton, Va., as well as a the assistant men's and women's coach at the school.
Lessons offered at Heinrich YMCA
The tennis courts at the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, have been resurfaced thanks in part to a $2,400 grant from the United States Tennis Association Adopt-A-Court program.
Junior, adult and private tennis lessons are being offered on the refurbished courts.
Junior participants, ages 7-17 are categorized by skill level and meet on the following days: beginner, from 4-5:30 p.m. Wednesdays; intermediate, from 4-5:30 p.m. Thursdays; advanced, 10:30 a.m.-noon Saturdays.
The cost is $52 for members, or $62 for nonmembers and includes four classes.
