Museum displays minimalist work

The Las Vegas Art Museum, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., is showing an exhibit called Southern California Minimalism through March 31.

General admission is $6, senior citizens pay $5 and children with a school ID pay $3. Children under 12 are admitted for free.

Exhibition features post-Sept. 11 photos

Charleston Heights Arts Center is showing artist Laura Kleger's photographs from her collection titled Home Front.

The subject of the show is the social landscape, both public and private, in post-Sept. 11 America. The show will run through April 2 at 800 S. Brush St. Admission is free.

Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

The exhibition is presented by the Cultural Affairs Division of the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services.

Book drive to support Clark County READS

Sammy's Woodfired Pizza and local comedian and magician Mac King will be joining forces to support The Public Education Foundation's Clark County READS program through Mac King's March Book Drive.

The book drive promotion encourages patrons of Sammy's Woodfired Pizza to donate new or gently used children's books targeting children between the ages of 4 and 12 years old. In exchange for the donations customers will receive a free Messy Sundae certificate.

Clark County READS, in conjunction with the Public Education Foundation, Clark County, Clark County School District and the Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, aims to improve literacy through recruiting volunteer reading partners and providing books to schools.

Books can be dropped off at either of Sammy's Woodfired Pizza locations at 6500 W. Sahara Ave. or 4300 W. Sunset Road.

EGG HUNT

Easter Seals to host 5K run and 1-mile hop

Easter Seals Southern Nevada has scheduled a 5K run and 1-mile Bunny Hop and Easter Egg Hunt for 8 a.m. on April 15 at the Desert Breeze Recreation Center, 8275 Spring Mountain Road.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Easter Seals to provide services to aid children and adults with special needs to help them lead more independent lives.

Registration for the event is $25, and sponsorships are still available. Easter Seals Southern Nevada hopes to make the hunt an annual event.

Eyewear fashion event scheduled

Dr. Edward J. Malik and Eyes & Optics will host an eyewear fashion event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at Eyes & Optics, 2261 S. Rainbow Blvd.

Designer representatives from several eyewear companies will be present. Among those expected to participate include Tag Heuer, Daniel Swarovski, FRED Paris and Alain Mikli.

During the event, the store will offer discounts on select eyewear and lenses.

Southern Hills Hospital to host Baby Fair

Southern Hills Hospital and Medical Center will host its second annual Baby Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 29 at the hospital, 9300 W. Sunset Road, near the Las Vegas Beltway.

The fair is free and open to the public.

Attendees will enjoy free gifts, information on newborn care, educational sessions from medical experts, car seat safety checks and raffle prizes.

Participants also have the opportunity to win the grand prize, consisting of 2,000 diapers or a full nursery furniture set.

Immunizations will be available for $15 per child with the presentation of records.

RECRUITMENT

City of Las Vegas offers lifeguard training

The city of Las Vegas municipal pool is hosting American Red Cross lifeguard training courses from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. through Friday.

The Aquatics Unit of the Department of Leisure Services' Recreation Division will be recruiting certified lifeguards to work at the city's pools this summer.

Lifeguards must be 16 years of age or older, have completed 40 hours of course work, and pass a water skills test to meet certification requirements.
