Where a star is born
Former area resident takes the stage in children's musical

At age 3, former Green Valley resident Suzanne Hepker started taking dance lessons. Though she didn't know at the time that two decades later she would dance professionally in a New York-based music theater production, Hepker said she has always known she wanted a career in musical theater.

After almost five years living in Colorado and New York, Hepker will return to the valley this week as a cast member with the touring musical production "Dragon Tales Live."

Hairdresser happy to tell the tale of her colorful history

They called her Marilyn, the Calendar Girl, and her performance was for the appeal, not so much to reveal.

Georgia "Marilyn" Marzette grew up between here and Southern California. She was 18 when she decided to follow in the footsteps of her predecessors, like Gypsy Rose Lee, Little Egypt and Sally Rand.

Civil War soldier's life remains closed book despite digging

The blue and the gray grave site in Woodlawn Cemetery on the border of North Las Vegas and Las Vegas -- two men, separated by war in the 1860s, united by friendship in the early 20th century, brought together for eternity by death. Possibly the only grave in the country with a Confederate and Yankee lying side by side.

Las Vegas resident Chris Vranian is founder of <a href="http://RockandRollGallery.com">RockandRollGallery.com</a>, a Web-based company that sells photographs of famous musicians. His wife, Claire Jane Vranian, has been doing special makeup effects in movies for about 12 years.

Perhaps it is fitting that their first collaboration as business partners was something that involved both fields -- special effects and music.

When North 5th Street was extended from Brooks Avenue north to Cheyenne Avenue, a change had to be made at the par-three North Las Vegas Golf Course.

The ninth tee was on high ground, and the hole was about 200 yards away, and the golfers were swinging hard. And now the errant balls were hooking out over the fence and into traffic, said city recreation programmer Mike Buttell, who for eight years has overseen the course.

Squad roots for various sports, gains 'sisters' each season

The Boulder City High School cheerleaders certainly aren't the stereotypical cheerleading squad. They are hard working, dedicated young ladies who enjoy their sport and love to fire up the crowd at all the football and basketball games.

"This is my first year of being the cheerleading coach and I love it," said coach Caroline Nay. "The girls are great kids, and I enjoy working with them. We have received many compliments on this year's team, and we appreciate all the fan support and enthusiasm."
