PUMA national tryouts, powered by the Baseball Factory and Team One, will take place on Sunday at UNLV's Earl A. Wilson Stadium. All high school athletes ages 13-18 are encouraged to attend.
Players are asked to report to the field at noon for registration. Tryouts will begin at 1 p.m. The registration fee is $40.
Top players from the tryout may be selected for the USA Junior Olympic Tournament, Dodgertown World Series or the Cape Cod Weekly Training Camp.
Baseball Factory and Team One Baseball's staff of professional scouts, former professional players and former college coaches will evaluate players on the field and lead a college recruiting Q-and-A session.

The Las Vegas Warriors are recruiting 9-year-old baseball players for competitive tournament play locally, as well as some traveling. The Warriors are a Little League-friendly club.

BASKETBALL
Adult leagues opening at center
Adult basketball teams are invited to register and participate in two evening recreational leagues that begin Feb. 27 at West Community Center, inside West Middle School, 2050 Sapphire Stone.
A league for those over 30 years old will play Monday nights, while the C division league for ages 18 and older will play Wednesdays from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Both leagues will feature an eight-game schedule followed by a single-elimination tournament. The cost to participate is $225 per team of five or more players, plus $25 officials' fees per team.
Registration will be open until filled or until Friday. Game times will be 6:30, 7:30 and 8:30 p.m. Basketballs will be supplied. The leagues are sponsored by the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services.

Local teams ranked nationally
Palo Verde High School's boys team, 23-2 at press time, was ranked No. 4 in the Southwest and No. 25 in the nation by the National Prep Poll put out by Associated Press on Jan. 30.
The Panthers, who have now gone 75-16 over the last three seasons, moved down from No. 22 in the national rankings. Palo Verde also was ranked No. 9 in the Southwest in the Jan. 30 rankings released by USA Today.
The Bishop Gorman High School girls basketball team, 22-1 at press time, was ranked No. 8 in the West by USA Today in its Jan. 30 rankings, up from the No. 9 spot.
Web site offers state rankings
MaxPreps.com offers a state ranking of all high schools in all classes on its Web site. The top 20 teams, in order, from its Jan. 30 poll were: Palo Verde, Bishop Gorman, Rancho, Galena, Reno, Foothill, Silverado, Centennial, Valley, Durango, Hug, Mojave, Bonanza, Canyon Springs, Cimarron-Memorial, Cheyenne, Eldorado, Faith Lutheran, Green Valley and Coronado.
Five of the top 20 teams in this latest poll reside in the Sunset Region's Northwest Division: Palo Verde (No. 1), Centennial (No. 8), Mojave (No. 12), Cimarron (No. 15) and Cheyenne (No. 16).
BOWLING
Three prepsters roll perfect games
Three high school bowlers rolled perfect 300 games this past season.
Kelly Rand, of Green Valley, rolled a perfect game on Dec. 12 at Renata's Sunset Lanes; Jason Lucero, of Palo Verde, had a perfect game on Dec. 12 at the Suncoast Lanes; and Bobby Taylor of Del Sol rolled a 300 game on Jan. 3 at Renata's.

YMCA taking youth hoops cheer sign-ups
The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is accepting sign-ups for Youth Basketball League Cheerleading. Participants will learn cheer/dance routines and will perform during Saturday Youth Basketball League games.

Amanda Marks wins Golden Sword
Amanda Marks, a sixth-grade student at The Meadows School, was named the 2006 Pacific Coast Section's Women's Foil Fencer of the Year in the Youth 12 and Under division. The announcement was made at the Jan.14-15 South Coast Youth Invitational Fencing Meet in Santa Ana, Calif., where Amanda emerged as the high-point winner in the Pacific Coast's Junior Circuit, scoring 2,262 points.

YMCA schedules lessons for kids
The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is accepting sign-ups for Total Golf Adventure, a program that teaches youth golf's fundamentals.
The program is designed to help participants develop confidence, motor skills, good sportsmanship and a high level of concentration.

Local Justin Lamb wins at The Strip
Henderson's Justin Lamb won the Super Pro 1/8-mile on Jan. 28 at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a time of 4.986 seconds (135.88 miles per hour) in his 2000 Cameron dragster.
In the Street class, Jon Irving of Boulder City was the runner up, finishing the 1/8-mile race in 8.403 seconds (83.79 mph) in his 2002 Camaro.
SOFTBALL
League seeks umps for fastpitch games
The Northwest Girls Softball-Fastpitch League is looking for persons age 16 years and older to officiate girls softball. Some knowledge of softball and baseball is required.
Umpires will receive $25 per game. The league will play Mondays through Saturdays.

Locals fare well at Snowball Sectional
Several local tennis players performed well at the Snowball Sectional tournament held Jan 14-18 in Salt Lake City.
Ryan Gormley won the Boys 18's, while Frideric Prandecki finished third in the age group. Farwa Husain won the Girls 16's in straight sets while Stan Breland finished third in the Boys 16's.
Alexis Garrett won the Girls 14's with Chrissy Uriarte finishing fourth. Jeff Vongman took second in the Boys 14's with Patrick Kawka finishing third.
In Boys 12's, Kristofer Yee was the winner as he defeated local Brian Foley in straight sets in the championship match. Brendan Aguilar finished third in the age group.
Tourney on tap later this month
The Red Rock Junior Tennis Classic will be played Feb. 22 to 26 at the Red Rock Country Club, 2250 Red Springs Drive. The entry fee is $30 for singles and $40 per doubles team. Entry fees include a T-shirt, and participants will get two matches.

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, is accepting sign-ups for its Junior Sports Academy, a beginner program for children ages 3-5 and their parents.
The program will be held Saturdays from 9 to 10 a.m. from Feb. 25 through April 1. It includes two weeks each of soccer, T-ball and basketball. Equipment is provided. Parent participation is required.
