Third Thursday celebration to begin

The Water Street District's monthly celebration of the arts, Third Thursday, will be held Thursday in downtown Henderson along Water Street and Basic Road.

The event will feature the work of artists from the Henderson and Las Vegas areas.

There will also be entertainment, live music and arts and crafts demonstrations.

The event will run from 5 to 9 p.m. and is free and open to the public.

Gallery to display African-American artist

The Gallery at Liberty Pointe is set to feature the work of artist Albert Yabo Stewart beginning Monday. The show, titled Untold Truths is a collection of works from throughout the life of the late folk artist and storyteller, focusing on mythic imagery and stories rooted in Africa.

Stewart's work focuses on his African-American heritage, his family stories and the struggle for freedom and civil rights in America.

Untold Truths will be featured through March 24 at the Gallery at Liberty Pointe, inside the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway. A public reception for the showing will be held at the gallery on Feb. 22 from 7 to 8 p.m.

Sunstone Dental seeks book donations

In honor of Nevada Reading Week, Feb. 27 to March 3, Sunstone Dental Care will collect new and gently used books for children ages 4 to 12 through March 2.

Once the books are collected, they will be taken to the Clark County READS warehouse, sorted, then made available to Clark County School District teachers.

Sunstone Dental Care is at 1701 Green Valley Parkway inside Legacy Business Park. Books can be dropped off Monday through Thursday 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Libraries exchange food for late fees

The Henderson District Public Libraries will accept non-perishable food items as payment for overdue book fines during the month of February. The Food for Fines program is part of a community effort to bring food to those in need.

The campaign is valid for up to $25 worth of fines, though food donation credit will not be applied to unreturned materials. All donated food will go to Henderson Allied Community Advocates.

SINGING

Prospective vocalists get shot at local choir

The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society choir is accepting new members for this year's concert season.

Openings are available in all voice parts, and any member of the community is welcome to audition.

Rehearsals are held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. every Sunday in UNLV's Alta Ham Fine Arts building, Room 222.
