The Marty Barrett Little League is holding a free registration for students from three selected elementary schools in North Las Vegas from 6-8 p.m. on Feb. 15 at Peter Piper Pizza, 2401 E. Lake Mead Blvd.
Students from the three schools -- Cahlan, Martinez and McCall -- are eligible for the offer. To qualify students need to carry a C average in school and must bring a copy of their most recent progress report or report card to show proof of their grades. The season begins in March.
The league, one of the oldest and most-renowned in the area, was named after Major League Baseball player Marty Barrett, a second baseman who starred for Rancho High School before making his way to the Boston Red Sox, where he was named the MVP of the 1986 American League Championship Series.
"We're sponsoring all of the kids within those three schools," MBLL President Anh Gainey said.
Gainey, along with the board of directors of the league, decided to foot the costs for the boys and girls who will enroll, with the aim of trying to allow some of the more economically disadvantaged students an opportunity to play baseball, as well as softball, which the league will offer this year.
Besides offering a free season to the students at these three schools, the MBLL is trying to get coaches and umpires for the upcoming season, and also seeks donations from anyone in the North Las Vegas community or elsewhere wishing to help the league.
"We heavily depend on donors and sponsorships from the community," Gainey added.
Knowing that an offer like this may generate a buzz in the community, Gainey said she and the board will allow a similar opportunity next season..
"We plan on doing this again next year with some different schools," Gainey said.
Anyone interested in the free registration, umpiring, coaching or making a donation can call the league at 251-6585, Gainey at 643-5122, or visit www.eteamz.com/martybarrett.
