Midshipman Dennis Edward Reppond of Las Vegas returned recently to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy after spending months at sea training aboard U.S. Merchant Marine vessels.

Reppond, the son of Dennis and Elizabeth Reppond, sailed on U.S. Merchant Marine ships as part of the academy's work-study program. Among the countries he visited were Japan, Korea, Taiwan and China.

A graduate of Palo Verde High School, Reppond was nominated to attend the academy by Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., and Rep. Shelley Berkley, D-Nev.

Phillips Academy in Andover, Mass., has announced that ninth-grader Chase D. Ebert, son of Dr. and Mrs. Charles Ebert III of Las Vegas, has made the honor roll with a 5.5 average on a 6-point scale.

Chase attended Las Vegas Day School through eighth grade. He participates in football, track, fencing, climbing, rowing, plays the saxophone and writes for Amnesty International.

Seven fencers from the Fencing Academy of Nevada qualified for the Junior Olympics to be held in February in Hartford, Conn. James Stewart (The Meadows School), Dakota Root (home-schooled), Naryan Pahti (Bishop Gorman), Reggie Korolkov (Rancho), Rachel Finney (The Meadows School), Kian Ameli (Palo Verde) and Nik-Nik Ameli (The Meadows School) will represent the Nevada division.

Red Rock fencers Amanda Marks, Ben Pettit and Justin Joyce took home honors at the Phoenix Junior Fencing Challenge in Mesa, Ariz. on Nov. 19 and 20.

Marks, a student at The Meadows School, took a gold medal in the mixed 12 and under foil competition.

Pettit, a student at Las Vegas Academy, finished first in open saber, and Joyce, a graduate of Palo Verde High School, finished second.

Marks went on to win a bronze in under 12 women's epee at the South Coast Youth Invitational Fencing Meet Jan. 14 and 15 in Santa Ana, Calif.

She was named the Pacific Coast's Under 12 Women's Fencer of the Year and will receive a Golden Sword Award for her performance in a four-tournament series. Also in California, Cameron Rost, a Bryan Elementary School student, won a silver in under 10 men's saber, Leila Ricciardo won a bronze in under 12 women's epee and Mai Carmen Requena, a student at Rogich Middle School, finished sixth in under 12 women's epee.
