The Cultural Affairs Division of the Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services is letting no grass grow as spring heads toward the hot months. A full slate of events is on tap for May, according to spokesman Stephanie Fosse. All events are free unless otherwise indicated.
The West Las Vegas Arts Center, at 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd., will host Norma Miller, a renowned swing dancer who will present her "Swing, Baby, Swing" stand-up act and film. The performance is set for 6 p.m. May 5.
That same day, from 6 to 10 p.m., First Friday in the Las Vegas Arts District will draw visitors to the Main Street-Charleston Boulevard area for the monthly block party. At 7 and 9 p.m., Super Summer Theatre will perform excerpts from three upcoming productions: "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," " Return to the Forbidden Planet" and "Bells Are Ringing."
From 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on May 7, the Las Vegas Patriotic Mexican Committee will hold its annual Cinco de Mayo celebration at Freedom Park, East Washington Avenue and Mojave Road, with exhibits, music and food. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 13, Helldorado Days kicks off with a parade downtown and then moseys over to the Cultural Corridor along Las Vegas Boulevard North for a variety of productions at the Old Mormon Fort, the Las Vegas History Museum, the Lied Discovery Children's Museum, Las Vegas Library and the Reed Whipple Cultural Center. Meanwhile, children ages 10 to 16 are encouraged to join the Watoto Book Club at the West Las Vegas Arts Center, 947 W. Lake Mead Blvd. The club will meet from 11 a.m. to noon May 13 and 27. Book selections will be based on an African-American curriculum, and all materials will be provided.
A Mother's Day dance is slated for 6 to 10 p.m. May 13, at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St. The Carl Grove Combo will dispense rhythm. Tickets are $20.
A Mother's Day concert and brunch will follow at noon May 14, at the Reed Whipple Cultural Center, 821 Las Vegas Blvd. N. Call 229-6211 for reservations. Tickets are $12. The concert at 2 p.m. will require brunch tickets. A reception will follow.
The Downtown Cultural Series will offer Andean music by Ecuadorian Jhon Mosquera at noon May 19 at the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse, 333 Las Vegas Blvd. South.
At 7:30 p.m. that same day, the Poet's Corner will present a forum for established poets and open-mic participants hosted by Keith Brantley and Pendelita Toney at the West Las Vegas Arts Center at 947 W. Lake Mead. Blvd.
Registration for a variety of summer classes will run from May 20 to June 8. The classes, ranging from Spanish to painting to ceramics to vocal music, will take place June 13 to July 23, with fees varying.

Brazilian-born vocalist Claudia Villela will be accompanied by guitarist Ricardo Peixoto for an 8 p.m. May 20 performance at Sammy Davis Jr. Festival Plaza at 720 Twin Lakes Drive in Lorenzi Park. An old-time barn dance will be sponsored by the Nevada Old Time Contra Dancers from 7 to 10 p.m. May 27, at the Charleston Heights Arts Center Ballroom, 800 S. Brush St. Callers and fiddlers will offer square dancing, mixers, contras, waltzes and polkas. A free dance lesson will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $6 for adults, $5 for members and $3 for students, active military personnel and children.
