Cimarron-Memorial High School graduate Jordan Muir, a freshman at Brigham Young University, was named the Mountain West Conference's Pitcher of the Week for the week ending April 10.
Muir, a right-hander, came in relief in two games for the Cougars and ended up winning both games. Muir entered in relief against UNLV, with his team trailing 5-2, and held the Rebels scoreless as BYU rallied to win the game.
Muir allowed just four hits and no runs on the week, while striking out seven and walking none in 10.2 innings of work.
Silverado moves up on Top 25 list
Silverado High School's baseball team moved up to the No. 9 spot in the nation, named by the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in its April 17 Top 25 poll.
The Skyhawks, who have been ranked No. 1 in Southern Nevada by the Las Vegas Review-Journal in its weekly polls, moved up from the No. 14 spot after being ranked No. 35 in the nation by Baseball America in its preseason poll, the only team from Nevada to make the list.
Silverado, coached by Brian Whitaker, was 18-1-1 at press time.
The Woodlands (Texas), with a record of 24-1, remained the No. 1 ranked team in the nation for a second straight week.
Junior Giants seek players, coaches
The Las Vegas Junior Giants are holding sign-ups until the beginning of June for players ages 4-14 and coaches.
Season play begins in June and runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St.

Centennial's Lucas named All-America
Centennial High School's Italee Lucas was recently named to the Parade All-America High School Girls Basketball team.
The 5-foot-8-inch junior, who led her team to state championships in 2004 and 2005, averaged 22.8 points, 8.6 assists, 5.2 rebounds and 4.6 steals per game last season and was named Nevada's Class 4A Player of the Year by the Las Vegas Review-Journal and the Reno Gazette-Journal.
Gorman girls ranked No. 17
The Bishop Gorman High School girls basketball team finished the season ranked No. 17 in the final rankings by the USA Today its Super 25 girls basketball rankings, the Gaels' highest ranking in the poll of the season.
Gorman went 31-1 in capturing its first girls state championship, defeating opponents by an average of 33 points per game under head coach Sheryl Krmpotich.
Church to offer summer camp
Christ the King, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, is offering a summer basketball camp from June 26-28 for grades 4-9.

New academy debuts at YMCA
The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites youth ages 7 to 15 to learn everything from basketball fundamentals to advanced game execution from former UNLV, NBA and WNBA players.
Participants will have access to the YMCA's new computer learning center. Staff will offer homework assistance to help students maintain their grade-point averages. Boys and girls of all skill levels are welcome.
New sessions begin on the first of each month. The program is held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday. The cost is $79 per month, per player. Participants receive $25 off the first month when they donate a new basketball to the academy.

YMCA spring leagues form
The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites boys and girls basketball teams of all skill levels in grades 3-12 to compete in a spring league, May 6 to July 8.
Games are played Saturdays. Team registration is ongoing through Monday at the YMCA. The team cost is $310 plus a $20 referee fee per team/per game.
Winners of third- through eighth-grade divisions play in the Main Event Tournament or the Las Vegas Showcase, pending an eight-team minimum per division.

TBA offers camps for youngsters
The Tarkanian Basketball Academy is offering a year-round program for all Track Breakers in grades 1-5.
The cost is $95 per week and the program runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. The program includes an academic binder, T-shirt, snacks and lunch.
Breakers learn fundamentals and compete in sports games, such as basketball, volleyball and soccer. Xbox and PlayStation tournaments are held daily. The learning center staff will academically challenge breakers with games and activities.
Sunday Skills camp set to get under way
The Tarkanian Basketball Academy will offer a weekly two-hour Sunday Skills Camp for boys and girls of all ages and skill levels.
The camp will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sundays at the Stations Sports Complex beginning on May 7. The cost is $15 per class.
Academy to offer recreational league
The Tarkanian Basketball Academy will offer a recreational league. Interested parties should register between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. at the school.
The cost is $560 per team and includes eight regulation games, entry into the league championship playoffs, trophies for all division winners and all referee/scorekeeper fees.
Games will be played at the Station's Sports Complex on Friday evenings and Saturdays starting May 6 and ending June 17. The number of teams are limited and spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
The UNLV boxing club won its first national championship, edging out Air Force and Army by one point at the National Collegiate Boxing Association Championships on April 8 in Reno.
The Rebels had two individual champions in sophomores Greg Murrell (156 pounds) and Henry Namauu (195 pounds), and three second-place finishers in freshman Jason Morris (112 pounds), junior Jeff Watkins (147 pounds) and sophomore Jason Crocco (185 pounds).

YMCA offers Nia Technique classes
Nia Technique classes are held from 9 to 10 a.m. Tuesdays at the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane.
In addition, classes are held from 6 to 7 p.m. on Wednesday and from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. on Saturday at the Durango Hills Community Center, 3521 N. Durango Drive.
The YMCA is the only organization in Las Vegas to offer these classes, led by Stacey Hall, a certified blue-belt Nia instructor.

The Nevada Chapter of the March of Dimes will hold its WalkAmerica 2006 on Saturday in downtown Las Vegas.
The 2.5-mile walk will begin with registration at 8 a.m., followed by the walk at 9 a.m.
Proceeds from WalkAmerica support the March of Dimes' mission of trying to prevent premature births, birth defects and infant mortality through research, education, community services and advocacy.

Police-Firefighters Tournament on tap
The fourth annual Police Versus Firefighters Charity Golf Tournament will be held May 25 at the Highland Falls Golf Club, 10201 Sun City Blvd.
Check-in is at 7 a.m., with tee-off at 8 a.m. The cost is $120 per player or $480 per foursome.
There will be hole-in-one prizes, a longest drive and closest to the pin contest, a raffle and other awards. The entry fee includes greens fees, golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch and a tournament hat.

Alzheimer's tourney to tee off on June 3
The second annual Alzheimer's Memorial Golf Tournament is set for June 3 at the Aliante Golf Club, 3100 W. Elkhorn Drive North. The sign-up deadline is May 20.
The cost is $75 per person and includes greens fees, cart, range balls and lunch. There also will be raffle prizes, a putting contest, a closest-to-the-pin contest, a longest drive contest and a giant team skins game.

Sign-ups begin at Durango Hills YMCA
Youth ages 3-12 years are invited to tumble into the joys of gymnastics and begin learning routines on different apparatus at the Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive.
A new session will run from May 2 to June 6. Participants ages 3 to 5 will meet from 6 to 7 p.m. Tuesday or from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday.
Gymnastics I will be held from 5 to 6 p.m. for ages 6 to 7 and from 6 to 7 p.m. for ages 8 to 12 on Thursday.

New season to begin Saturday
Las Vegas Roller Hockey will be holding a 10-week season that begins play on Saturday.
The league is for children ages 5-14 and costs $125.
Players get one hour of practice time weekly, along with jerseys and trophies.
The league also is looking for middle and high school teams, as well as coaches for the upcoming season, which begins in the fall.
LVRH also has an adult league that plays Sunday through Thursday nights, with all levels of play, from beginner to advanced.
Southern Nevada Fastpitch Tournaments will be hosting its Bring It On tournament Saturday and Sunday.
The tourney is open to girls in 10 and under, 12 and under and 14 and under divisions, and is a WWS qualifier.

NTA schedules several classes
The Nevada Tennis Association will start conducting classes for juniors and adults at various locations during this week.
The classes are for entry level to intermediate players ages 5 and up. The fee is $50 per person for the six-week session.
Classes will focus on the fundamental skills of tennis and improvement of those skills through hands-on instruction, drills, games and competitive play. Racquets and balls are provided at no charge.
