Restuarants to particiapte in Dining Out for Life AIDS fundraiser
By MARIA PHELAN
VIEW STAFF WRITER

When Dining Out for Life comes to the Las Vegas Valley next week, community members will have the opportunity to help a local nonprofit group by simply going out for breakfast, lunch or dinner.

"The possibilities are endless for this fundraiser," said the Rev. Joseph O'Brien, founder and executive director of the Saint Therese Center. "In other cities people really look forward to it."

Participants swoop in from around the Southwest for event

From a distance, they sound like so many lawn mowers buzzing through suburban yards, or a large, active swarm of honeybees about their hive.

Instead, upon closer inspection, they are so many pilots -- pilots who never get into a cockpit, taxi out to a runway, or take off -- and planes small enough for the tail or cockpit to be crushed by a misplaced foot.

Las Vegas resident Neil Fransen's face lit up when he walked into the Pinball Hall of Fame on a recent morning and asked about a favorite game from his childhood -- The Wizard. When Pinball Hall of Fame organizer Tim Arnold told him he had it, Fransen was eager to play the day away like he did as a child.

"There was nobody that could beat me at that game," said Fransen, 46. "As a kid, I played all day on one quarter."

Toy Train Operating Society displays model locomotives

By FRED COUZENS
VIEW STAFF WRITER

There's something about toy trains -- recollections of riding the rails, nostalgic memories of a childhood past, a realistic object shrunk to miniature proportions -- that brings out the kid in a person regardless of their age.

That was the case April 8 at the Nevada State Railroad Museum as members of the Toy Train Operating Society (TTOS) offered scale model-sized locomotives, coal tenders, boxcars and cabooses for youthful eyes and adult wallets along with model trains that choo-chooed their way around a layout that captivated everyone, especially the older kids.

Some mothers pass on their designing skills to their daughters. Some pass on a love of books or cooking or art. And some mothers pass on the importance of making a difference in the community.

The last scenario applies to the National Charity League, which has a Summerlin-based chapter.

Organization helps teenagers fund the costs of prom night

By ERIKA BAYER-POLAK

Many teenagers may have heard that if you don't go to prom, you'll regret it, but it's not always as easy as pinning a corsage and taking pictures.

Some students can't afford to attend the milestone celebration, and that's where Aly's Prom Closet comes in.

The earth moved for Clark County Commissioner Tom Collins.

The commissioner donned a hard hat and mounted a 2,000-horsepower Komatsu front-end loader recently to officially begin the expansion of the Cora Coleman Senior Center at 2100 Bonnie Lane, just north of East Lake Mead Boulevard.

It took nearly two years to build it, but the new temple in Desert Shores is now completed, opening its doors just in time for Nissan.

"Nissan is when we celebrate the month of miracles," said Rabbi Yisroel Schanowitz, who established Chabad of Summerlin/Desert Shores in 1995. "And we consider this building nothing less than a miracle."

Five great teams and only four playoff spots.

That's the reality again this year for high school baseball teams in the Southwest Division as Sierra Vista, Bishop Gorman, Durango, Bonanza and Spring Valley will bang heads with all hoping not to be the team to have to watch the other four come playoff time.

Likely the deepest division top-to-bottom in Southern Nevada this season, the Sunrise Region's Southeast Division should be interesting to watch this spring, with all seven teams having a realistic chance of earning a playoff berth.

Ranked No. 13 in the nation by Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Association in its Top 25 rankings released April 3, Silverado, coached by Brian Whitaker, is the top of the division and is considered by many as the most talented team in the Silver State.

First-year Arbor View team stands out in Northwest

By KEVIN STOTT
VIEW STAFF WRITER

Traditionally one of the strongest divisions in Southern Nevada high school baseball, the Sunset Region's Northwest Division may provide some surprises this spring as some of the stronger squads in the league lost key players to graduation, two teams have new coaches and its newest member, Arbor View, started its first season off like its program had been around for years.

If there is a clear-cut favorite in the Northwest, Centennial (26-12 last year), coached by Charlie Cerrone, would have to get the nod. After losing to Sierra Vista in last year's state championship game, the Bulldogs return 11 seniors.
