BASEBALL

Silverado moves up Top 25 list

Silverado High School's baseball team was ranked No. 14 in the nation by the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in its April 3 Top 25 poll.

The Skyhawks, who have been ranked No. 1 in Southern Nevada by the Las Vegas Review-Journal in its weekly polls, moved up from the No. 18 spot in the March 30 poll after being ranked No. 35 in the nation by Baseball America in its preseason poll, the only team from Nevada to make the list. Silverado, coached by Brian Whitaker, was 12-1-1 at press time. The Woodlands (Texas) was the No. 1 ranked team in the nation, moving up from the No. 3 spot.

Junior Giants seek players, coaches

The Las Vegas Junior Giants are holding sign-ups until the beginning of June for players ages 4-14 and coaches.

Season play begins in June and runs from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily at the Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St.

High School scout team now forming

A scout team for various professional Major League Baseball organizations is looking for players.

Tryouts will be held on Sunday at Oxford Field, at Anasazi Road and Far Hills Drive in Summerlin.

All players must report to the field no later than 9 a.m. Registration and tryouts will begin at 9:30 a.m.

All high school athletes born after July 31, 1988, are invited to attend. The tryout fee is $15. The scout team will attend the Memorial Day Tournament, which will be held May 27-29, as well as a June tournament.

BASKETBALL

Durango's McFarland playing in Germany

Durango High School forward Andre McFarland, a first-team All-State selection this year, was named to the U.S. Albert Schweitzer basketball team and will be playing for the team in Mannheim, Germany until Sunday. The 6-foot-5-inch senior joined 6-7 Galena sophomore forward Luke Babbitt on the squad.

Stinnett changes mind on Iowa State

Palo Verde High School senior P'Allen Stinnett, named Class 4A Player of the Year by the Review-Journal and the Reno Gazette-Journal, was granted a release from his letter of intent to attend Iowa State next year and has reopened his recruiting process.

The 6-foot-4-inch swingman, who averaged 19.9 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.8 steals per game last season after averaging 25 points as a junior and leading the Panthers to the state championship game, decided to change his mind when Cyclones head coach Wayne Morgan, the person who recruited him, was replaced by new coach Greg McDermott last month.

Calvary Chapel's Reyes NAIA-bound

Calvary Chapel senior Kerri Reyes signed a letter of intent to attend NAIA Division I Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Calif.

Reyes will play for the Warriors and coach Kirsten McKnight in the Golden State Athletic Conference. Westmont went 15-16 this past season.

New academy debuting at YMCA

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites youths ages 7 to 15 to learn everything from basketball fundamentals to advanced game execution from former UNLV, NBA and WNBA players.

Participants will have access to the YMCA's new computer learning center.

Staff will offer homework assistance to help students maintain their grade-point averages. Boys and girls of all skill levels are welcome.

New sessions begin on the first of each month. The program is held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

The cost is $79 per month, per player. Participants receive $25 off the first month when they donate a new basketball to the academy.

Recreation league, Bitty Ball on tap

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy, 2730 Rancho Drive, is taking registration for the Spring/Summer Recreational League at the Station's Sports Complex, directly behind the Palace Station at Interstate 15 and Sahara Avenue.

Individuals must register before Wednesday. Tuition for the eight-week spring/summer session is $275. Registration includes: Player evaluation and team placement with a TBA-certified coach, eight one-hour basketball skill sessions, eight team practices, eight regulation games, two league parties, entry into the league championship playoffs, report card and diploma.

Bitty Ball (grades kindergarten through second) registration is $215 and includes eight one-hour skill sessions, eight regulation games, two league parties, entry into the league championship playoffs, report card and diploma.

Teams also can register at the Station's Sports Complex between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. The cost is $560 per team and includes eight regulation games, entry into the league championship playoffs, trophies for all division winners and all referee/scorekeeper fees.

TBA offers camps for youngsters

The Tarkanian Basketball Academy is offering a year-round program open to all Track Breakers in grades first through fifth.

The cost is $95 per week and the program runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The program includes an academic binder, T-shirt, snacks and lunch. Breakers learn fundamentals and compete in sports games such as basketball, volleyball, soccer and more. Xbox and PlayStation tournaments are held daily. The learning center staff will academically challenge breakers with games and activities.

The Academy also will offer a weekly two-hour Sunday Skills Camp for boys and girls of all ages and skill levels.

The camp will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Sundays at the Stations Sports Complex beginning on May 7. The cost is $15 per class.

Cheer Nation set to host tryouts

Sign-ups under way for league boosters

CTK spring league forming

Christ the King, 4925 S. Torrey Pines Drive, is holding registration for its spring dodgeball league for players who are of high school age and older.

The league begins play in the first week of May. The entry fee is $100 per team for returning teams, $120 for new teams, with a 10-player max for teams.

YMCAs offering free program

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, and the Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, are offering a complimentary program design session to anyone who signs up for membership in April.

Green Valley's Murphy resigns

Green Valley High School football coach Greg Murphy has resigned his post after three years coaching the Gators.

Murphy went 5-5 last year and 12-18 overall at Green Valley after coaching at Centennial and Valley high schools the previous nine years.

FUNDRAISER

March of Dimes to hold walk

The Nevada Chapter of the March of Dimes will hold its WalkAmerica 2006 on April 29 in downtown Las Vegas. The 2.5-mile walk will begin with registration at 8 a.m. followed by the walk at 9 a.m.

Proceeds from WalkAmerica support the March of Dimes mission of preventing premature births, birth defects and infant mortality through research, education, community services and advocacy.

Police-Firefighters Tournament on tap

The fourth annual Police versus Firefighters charity golf tournament will be held May 25 at the Highland Falls Golf Club, 10201 Sun City Blvd.

Check-in is at 7 a.m., with tee off following at 8 a.m. The cost is $120 per player or $480 per foursome.

There will be hole-in-one prizes, a longest drive and closest to the pin contest, a raffle and other awards. The entry fee includes greens fees, golf cart, continental breakfast, lunch and a tournament hat.

New season to begin April 29

Las Vegas Roller Hockey will be holding a 10-week season that begins play April 29. The league is for children ages 5-14 and costs $125.

Players get one-hour of practice time weekly, along with jerseys and trophies.

The league also is looking for middle and high school teams, as well as coaches for the upcoming fall season.

LVRH also has an adult league that plays Sunday through Thursday nights, with all levels of play, from beginner to advanced.

Swimming class for babies to be held

The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites parents with babies between ages 6 and 36 months to sign up for water babies classes.

Babies are introduced to the water, water safety and basic skills with a parent present.

Babies can complete equivalent skill competency to progress to the next level.

Classes are available from 6 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesdays, and 9:30 to 10 a.m., 10:15 to 10:45 a.m., and 11 to 11:30 a.m. Saturdays.

A seven-week spring session begins the week of April 24. The cost is $45 for members and $95 for nonmembers.

NTA schedules several classes

The Nevada Tennis Association will start conducting classes for juniors and adults at various locations during the week of April 24.

The classes are for entry level to intermediate players ages 5 and up. The fee is $50 per person for the six-week session.

Classes will focus on the fundamental skills of tennis and improvement of those skills through hands-on instruction, drills, games and competitive play. Racquets and balls are provided at no charge.

TRACK & FIELD

LV Neon Invite meet slated for April 22-23

Youths from across the nation are expected to join young local athletes in the Las Vegas Neon Invitational outdoor track meet Saturday and Sunday at Clark High School, 4291 Pennwood Ave.

Boys and girls ages 5 to 18 may enter track events, high jump, mini-javelin, long jump, shot put, discus, triple jump and pole vault events. The meet also will offer wheelchair events, which will include shot put, javelin, and 60-, 100- and 200-meter races.

Participants must be members of United States of America Track & Field (USATF) or Wheelchair Sports USA, and will compete within their two-year age division. Events will begin at 9 a.m. each day. First- through sixth-place winners will receive awards.

Entry fees are $5 per event and $20 per relay. Fees, payable by money order, certified check or team check, must accompany entry forms. Late entries on meet day will be accepted between 7 and 9:30 a.m. only at Clark High School.

The event, co-hosted by the Nevada Association of the USATF and the city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services, is expected to be sanctioned by the USATF.

Church league serves up May 1

The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites volleyball teams with players ages 18 and older to participate in a church volleyball League on Monday evenings from 7 to 9 p.m., May 1 through June 5. Team pre-registration is necessary and is open through April 27. The cost is $150 per team, plus officials' fees. Each team must have a minimum of six players. Rubber-soled gym shoes are required; volleyballs and nets will be provided. Games will be played in the Brinley Middle School gym at 2480 Maverick St., or in the Gibson Middle School gym at 3900 W.
