Silverado ranked on Top 25 list
Silverado High School's baseball team, coached by Brian Whitaker, was ranked No. 18 in the nation by the Baseball America/National High School Baseball Coaches Hall of Fame in its March 20 Top 25 poll.
The Skyhawks, who were ranked No. 1 in Southern Nevada by the Las Vegas Review-Journal in its first poll released March 23, were ranked No. 35 in the nation by Baseball America in its preseason poll, the only team from the Silver State to make the list.
Spring break clinic on tap
Giambi's Hitman Baseball Academy, 1051 Mary Crest Road, Suite J, will be holding a three-day hitting and pitching clinic to help children ages 8-14 improve their skills.
The clinic will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. April 10 to 12 at the academy and costs $90 per child.

BASKETBALL
Athlete tabbed Player of Year
Bishop Gorman High School's Marcus Lawrence was named the Nevada Gatorade Player of the Year after averaging 14 points and 8.5 assists per game for the Gaels this past season.
Lawrence, a second-team All-State selection, has signed a letter of intent to attend UNLV next year, where he will play for coach Lon Krueger.
Adult leagues set to get under way
The city of Las Vegas Department of Leisure Services invites basketball players ages 18 and older to participate in evening leagues that begin April 17 and 18 and continue through May 31.
Adults ages 40 and older will play from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays. Participants ages 18 and older will compete from 7 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays.
The cost is $25 per person, plus officials' fees. Registration is open through April 14. Rubber-soled gym shoes are required; basketballs and goals will be provided.
Games will be played in the Brinley Middle School gym, 2480 Maverick St., and in the Gibson Middle School gym, 3900 W. Washington Ave.

Boys & Girls Clubs hold registrations
The Boys & Girls Clubs of Las Vegas is holding registration for its spring basketball league for boys and girls in grades 6 through 12.
The sign-ups are taking place 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Donald W. Reynolds Unit in Green Valley, and the Lied Memorial Unit. Players in the recreational and advanced divisions can sign up.
The cost is $60 and includes an annual membership to the club, 10 regular-season games, a postseason tournament and a personal team T-shirt.
Regular season games for the Reynolds League begin March 27. All games and practices will be held at the Donald W. Reynolds Boys & Girls Club, 2980 S. Robindale Road.
Regular season games for the Lied Memorial League will begin April 10, with all games and practices held at the Lied Memorial Boys & Girls Club, 2850 S. Lindell St. Volunteer coaches and scorekeepers also are needed.

Durango Hills YMCA holds league sign-ups
The Durango Hills YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, invites boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 15 to sign up for youth basketball league.
The program runs from April 24 to June 16. One-hour practices are held Monday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings and times vary.

New academy debuts at YMCA
The Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane, invites youth ages 7 to 15 to learn everything from basketball fundamentals to advanced game execution from former UNLV, NBA and WNBA players.
Participants will have access to the YMCA's new computer learning center. Staff will offer homework assistance to help students maintain their grade point averages. Boys and girls of all skill levels are welcome.
New sessions begin on the first of each month. The program is held from 5 to 6 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday.

Sign-ups under way for league boosters
The Durango Hills YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive, invites youth between the ages of 6 and 15 to sign up for youth basketball league cheerleading.

FENCING
FAN nabs three national medals
Narayan Pathi led the Fencing Academy of Nevada to a gold medal at the United States Fencing Association's North American Cup fencing tournament held recently in Reno.
Pathi was among three medalists from the Fencing Academy of Nevada who competed at the tournament, which drew fencers from across the U.S., Canada and Mexico. Pathi won the first-place gold medal, while his teammate Mark Clayton won the eighth-place medal in Division 3 Men's Epee.
In other events, Nathalie Keft brought home the third-place bronze medal in Veteran Women's Epee.
These fencers train at the FAN at the Las Vegas Sports Park under the direction of fencing master Yves Auriol.
FUNDRAISER
Poker Run to benefit local National Guard
King Tut's Pub & Poker, 6138 W. Charleston Blvd., is holding its second annual Rock The Troops fundraiser to benefit the Friends of the Nevada National Guard on Saturday. The fundraiser begins with a poker run at 9 a.m. The run will be followed by a barbecue and live entertainment beginning at 3 p.m., featuring local blues favorite, The Moanin' Blacksnakes, and more.

Volunteers needed for Takefuji Classic
The LPGA Takefuji Classic is scheduled for April 11-16 at the Las Vegas Country Club, and tournament officials are looking for volunteers for all positions.

ROLLER HOCKEY
New season set to begin on April 29
Las Vegas Roller Hockey will be holding a 10-week season that begins play on April 29.
The league is for children ages 5-14 and costs $125.
Players get one hour of practice time weekly, along with jerseys and trophies.
The league also is looking for middle and high school teams, as well as coaches for the upcoming season, which begins in the fall.
LVRH also has an adult league that plays Sunday through Thursday nights, with all levels of play, from beginner to advanced.

New season set to start in Henderson
The new season of senior softball for the Henderson Parks Department will begin on Monday.
The league is looking for players age 40 and older.
The league has a 40-to-50 age division and a division for ages 50 and over.

TENNIS
NTA schedules several classes
The Nevada Tennis Association will start conducting classes for juniors and adults at various locations during the week of April 24.
The classes are for entry level to intermediate players ages 5 and up. The fee is $50 per person for the six-week session.
Classes will focus on the fundamental skills of tennis and improvement of those skills through hands-on instruction, drills, games and competitive play. Racquets and balls are provided at no charge.

Silverado wins Beach City Invite
The Silverado High School boys volleyball team won the Beach City Invitational held March 17-18 in La Jolla, Calif. The Skyhawks went a perfect 7-0 in the tourney and defeated Westview (Calif.) in the title match, 26-24, 25-21.
The Skyhawks' Richard Arguello was named the tournament MVP, with teammates Shawn Close and Mike Garrard being named to the all-tourney team.
