Eye doctors to offer funds for students
Vision Source, a network of optometrists in Las Vegas, plans to award 10 scholarships worth $1,000 each to high school seniors graduating this spring.
Those eligible must be enrolled as a senior at a Las Vegas, North Las Vegas or Henderson high school, and must plan on attending a university, college, community college or trade school in the fall.
Each Vision Source office will draw one winner at random on June 1. Entry forms are available through May 26 at each of the 10 Vision Source locations, or online at www.visionsourcevegas.com.
Residents also can nominate teachers for Teacher of the Year Award. Winners will receive a new lap top computer.
Friends and admirers of longtime Las Vegas News Bureau photographer Don English plan a tribute to him from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Nevada State Museum & Historical Society, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, in Lorenzi Park.
A program will begin at 6 p.m. and will include a video tribute prepared by Lynn Zook, director of the Classic Las Vegas Archive. The program also will feature reminiscences and stories from English's colleagues, friends and family.
Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt is scheduled to present a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the state for English's work in shaping the image of Las Vegas. English is known as one of the masters of the publicity shot -- performers, celebrities, and "cheesecake" showgirl shots. One of his most famous photos was the image of the mushroom cloud rising between the neon of Vegas Vic and the Las Vegas Club.
English stayed with the Las Vegas News Bureau until retiring in 1992.
A family festival is set from noon to 4 p.m. on April 15 at Sunny Springs Park, located at Golden Talon Avenue and Buffalo Drive.

Poker Run to benefit local National Guard
King Tut's Pub & Poker, 6138 W. Charleston Blvd., is holding its second annual Rock The Troops fundraiser to benefit the Friends of the Nevada National Guard on Saturday. The fundraiser begins with a poker run at 9 a.m. The run will be followed by a barbecue and live entertainment beginning at 3 p.m., featuring local blues favorites The Moanin' Blacksnakes and more.

Singers get new site for group rehearsals
The City of Lights Barbershop Chorus has relocated to the Mountain View Lutheran Church, 9550 W. Cheyenne Ave., for its weekly rehearsals.
Practices will be held from 7 to 10 p.m. every Tuesday. All guests and prospective members are welcome to attend. A formal "Guest Night" is planned for May 23.

Symposium planned for visually impaired
A Vision Forum is planned for 9 a.m. April 12 at the Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road. The event will include exhibitions by local, state and national equipment providers and service organizations for the visually impaired.
Attendees can attend five different 30-minute presentations, in addition to the opening and closing sessions. A free lunch and a raffle drawing also are included.
