Eye doctors to offer funds for students
Vision Source, a network of optometrists in Las Vegas, plans to award 10 scholarships worth $1,000 each to high school seniors graduating this spring.
Those eligible must be enrolled as a senior at a Las Vegas, North Las Vegas or Henderson high school, and must plan on attending a university, college, community college or trade school in the fall.
Each Vision Source office will draw one winner at random on June 1. Entry forms are available through May 26 at each of the 10 Vision Source locations, or online at www.visionsourcevegas.com.
Residents also can nominate teachers for Teacher of the Year Award. Winners will receive a new lap top computer.
Friends and admirers of longtime Las Vegas News Bureau photographer Don English plan a tribute to him from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the Nevada State Museum & Historical Society, 700 Twin Lakes Drive, in Lorenzi Park.
A program will begin at 6 p.m. and will include a video tribute prepared by Lynn Zook, director of the Classic Las Vegas Archive.
The program also will feature reminiscences and stories from English's colleagues, friends and family.
Lt. Gov. Lorraine Hunt is scheduled to present a certificate of appreciation on behalf of the state for English's work in shaping the image of Las Vegas.
English is known as one of the masters of the publicity shot -- performers, celebrities, and "cheesecake" showgirl shots. One of his most famous photos was the image of the mushroom cloud rising between the neon of Vegas Vic and the Las Vegas Club.
English stayed with the Las Vegas News Bureau until retiring in 1992.
The fourth annual Leukemia Cup Regatta is planned for 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday at Lake Mead. The fundraiser will include boat race competitions, a live and silent auction dinner, entertainment and an awards ceremony.
More than 40 boats of various types will be competing. Proceeds will go toward medical research and related needs.
Following the races on Saturday, an evening dinner with live and silent auctions and music by Tommy Rocker is slated at the Boulder Creek Golf Club, beginning with cocktails at 5 p.m. At 3 p.m. on Sunday, there will be a barbecue and awards ceremony announcing the race winners and the fundraising winner of the Leukemia Cup, held at the Water Safety Building.
"The need for cures is critical," said Judith Mitchell, executive director of the Southern Nevada Chapter of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. "There are more than 747,465 people with blood cancers in the United States alone, and 58,000 will die this year from these diseases."

Las Vegas Senior Lifeline announced Senior Prom-Shall We Dance? will be held at 6:30 p.m. on April 22 at Caesars Palace.

Symposium planned for visually impaired
A Vision Forum is planned for 9 a.m. April 12 at the Las Vegas Senior Center, 451 E. Bonanza Road. The event will include exhibitions by local, state and national equipment providers and service organizations for the visually impaired.
Attendees can attend five different 30-minute presentations, in addition to the opening and closing sessions. A free lunch and a raffle drawing also are included.
