Man on a mission
Boulder City resident makes sacrifices to lend a hand in ravaged Mississippi

View reporter Fred Couzens was given an opportunity to accompany Boulder City resident Denzil Mooney on a Hurricane Katrina relief mission. The following is an account of their 11-day journey that took place Sept. 8-18.

It may not have been as famous as "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure," but Denzil Mooney's journey to Hurricane Katrina-ravaged Mississippi was certainly a lot more interesting.

The trip in the cramped cab of a Ford F350 all began in Boulder City in the wee hours of the morning on Sept. 8. Eleven days, 5,000 miles and $1,000 later, Mooney walked away knowing what it's like to make a difference in a crisis.

Party at the Palms set to increase awareness of My Hope Chest

Alisa Savoretti, founder and president of My Hope Chest, hopes an official introductory party will familiarize local residents with the organization.

My Hope Chest, founded last year, is a nonprofit organization that provides uninsured and underprivileged women with reconstructive breast surgeries. The party, An Evening of Hope and Laughter, will be held at the Palms ballroom Oct. 14 from 7:30 until 10:30 p.m. The evening will consist of cocktails, hors d'oeuvres, music and a silent auction.
