BASKETBALL

Gorman's Watson named player of week

USA Today named Bishop Gorman guard Kashif Watson the boys national Player of the Week.

The senior scored 49 points, grabbed 13 rebounds, dished out nine assists and had nine steals in the state tournament as the Gaels won the 4A NIAA championship at the Orleans Arena.

Spring break camp at Walnut Center

Walnut Recreation Center, 3075 N. Walnut Road, plans a Spring Break Basketball Camp for boys and girls ages 11-17 from 9 a.m. to noon Monday-Friday. The cost of the camp is $50 per participant.

Developmental hoops league registration on

The Nevada Basketball Association is taking registrations for its Spring Basketball League.

All games will be played at the new Station Casinos Sports Center.

The league will have divisions for boys in grades 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and high school and for girls in grades 3-5, 6-8 and high school. The teams will play a minimum of eight games.

Registration is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 19 at Christ the King Church. The pre-registration cost before March 19 is $105 while the late-registration cost is $125.

Competitive hoops league opens sign-ups

The City of Las Vegas is taking registrations for its Competitive Spring Basketball League.

All games will be played at the new Station Casinos Sports Center.

The league will have divisions for boys in grades 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and high school and for girls in grades 3-4, 5-6, 7-8 and high school. The league will play a minimum of eight games.

Sign-ups under way for Reebok Big Time

Advance team registrations are under way online for Sonny Vaccaro's 11th annual Reebok Big Time tournament, the largest and most prestigious boys prep summer basketball tournament.

Held in Las Vegas since founded in 1995, this year's "Championship of the Summer" is set for July 22-26 and will feature 336 teams from around the nation and abroad.

Registrations are being accepted and processed on a first-come, first-served basis through the tournament's official Web site, www.reebokbigtime.com. Over 100 teams were turned away last year.

MARTIAL ARTS

Organizers cancel Saturday event

An event for martial arts practitioners of all ages has been postponed. A new date has not yet been set for the Las Vegas Martial Arts Championships.

The event had been scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday at the West Community Center.

Trophies were to be awarded in the forms (kata), sparring (kumite) and weapons competitions. Participants were to compete in these divisions by age, gender and belt ranking.

The West Community Center is inside West Middle School, 2050 Sapphire Stone Ave.

The cost is $25 for the first event and $5 for each additional event.

Special rates are being offered to schools that enter 10 or more competitors.

The admission fee for spectators is $5. Children 7 years old and younger are admitted for free. For more details, call 229-5080.

HOCKEY

Non-checking hockey for seniors

Seniors age 50 and over are invited to play non-checking pick-up hockey at the Fiesta Ice Arena from 10:45-11:45 a.m. every Wednesday. Interested players will not be committed to a league. Volunteers needed for Takefuji Classic

The LPGA Takefuji Classic is scheduled for April 11 to 16 at the Las Vegas Country Club and tournament officials are looking for volunteers for all positions.

Perks include a daily lunch, an extra club badge -- worth a $50 ticket -- and participation in the tourney-ending volunteer raffle and party.

Group schedules charity golf tourney

The Calvary Community Assembly scheduled its second annual charity golf tournament for 7 a.m. June 4 at Highland Falls Golf Course in Summerlin. The cost for the tournament is an $80 donation per person. Company sponsorships are available per holes in $100 (Silver), $500 (Gold) and $1,000 (Platinum) amounts. Advertisement signs also are available.

Red Cross to hold annual Golf Classic

The Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross plans its fourth annual Golf Classic for April 18 at the Tournament Players Club at Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Drive.

The tournament is set to begin at 6:30 a.m. with a continental breakfast for players and celebrity guests. Golfers are set to tee off in a shotgun start at 8 a.m. A luncheon and awards program is set for 1 p.m. at the clubhouse with television personality John Daly serving as master of ceremonies.

The cost for foursomes in the event is $1,500, while individual players can register for $400. All proceeds will be used to fund the local Red Cross' programs, said organizers.

MOTOR SPORTS

Drivers participate in Reading Week

Two drivers who compete in the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway participated in Nevada's Reading Week on March 4. Dustin Ash and Pit Boss, the mascot for the LVMS, were on hand at Brookman Elementary School, where Ash shared a story with the children and had two of his race cars on display.

Ash was crowned champion at the 13th annual Legends Cars Nationals last year and also won the Nevada State Championship.

Dan Garder also made an appearance at Goolsby Elementary School, where he stressed the importance of reading and distributed racing-related material to the children. Gardner races in the Bullring Bomber division at the Bullring.

SOCCER

Coaches from Las Vegas lauded

Palo Verde's Kalie McGuire and Centennial's Rachel Gordon were named co-Most Valuable Players for the Northwest Division, while Bonanza's Mia Tofano was named MVP in the Southwest Division.

McGuire led the Panthers to an undefeated regular season, Gordon helped the Bulldogs win their third Southern Nevada 4A title in the last four years, while Tofano, who also nabbed the honor last year, helped the Bengals, who were last year's champions, win their division.

Also named to the 26-member All-Southern Nevada team were Centennial's Mia Pierro and Audrey Falconi, Cheyenne's Sarah Hernandez and Palo Verde's Kayla Lambert and Nicole Velez in the Northwest; and Bishop Gorman's Kelly Gaghan and Whitney Hawkins, Bonanza's Kayla Bauder and Steffany Becker, Sierra Vista's Carlee O'Connell and Spring Valley's Cheryl Martin in the Southwest.

Jennifer Wintermute of Cheyenne was named the Coach of the Year in the Northwest, while Gerald Kearney of Bonanza took the honor in the Southwest.

TRIATHLON

Spring event registration open

Registration for the Lowery's Multigenerational Spring Triathlon is under way. The race is set for 7 a.m. April 17 at the Henderson Multigenerational Center, 250 S. Green Valley Parkway.

Four events will be offered: a Kids Triathlon Short Course, a Kids Triathlon Long Course, an Adult 50-and-Over Triathlon and a Parent/Kids Relay Triathlon.

TENNIS

Tournament set for junior novice players

The Nevada Tennis Association will conduct a novice tournament in April.

NTA Novice Tourney 3 is scheduled for April 15-17 at the Lorenzi Racquet Club. The entry fees are $27 for singles and $22 per team for doubles. Players ages 18 and under are eligible to compete.
