ARTS

Outdoor theater offers Broadway favorite

Super Summer Theatre 2005's production of "Once Upon a Mattress," opens July 13 at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park. The musical, based on the fable by Hans Christian Anderson, is to run consecutively Wednesday through Saturday up to July 30. The gates to the park open at 6 p.m. The musical begins about 8 p.m.

Some of the songs include "Shy," "Sensitivity," "Normandy," "Many Moons Ago" and "Yesterday I Loved You."

Located on State Highway 159, Spring Mountain Ranch State Park is situated roughly 18 miles from the city of Las Vegas, driving west on West Charleston at Highway 215. The park is about five miles past the Red Rock Visitors Center.

Evenings at the ranch are cool, so sweaters and blankets are advised. Lawn chairs can be rented for $1 each or bring your own lawn chair and blankets.

Refreshments will be available for purchase. Picnic dinners are allowed.

Advance tickets are available for $8 at UNLV Ham Hall Box Office 895-2787. They also are available online at unlvtickets.com or at Prestige Travel in Smith's Shopping Center at West Lake Mead and Rampart boulevards. Tickets will be $10 at the gate. Children under 6 are admitted free.

Musical Arts Society needs singers

The Southern Nevada Musical Arts Society, founded in 1963, invites singers from around the valley to perform the popular choral masterworks with the society, in its upcoming season. There are openings for all vocal ranges.

City offers CPR classes for ages 16 and up

Learn cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and you might save a life. The City of Las Vegas announces CPR classes for those 16 to adult, at two locations in the Summerlin area.

One is from 5-8 p.m. July 19 at Molasky Community School, 7801 W. Gilmore Ave. Call 229-5345 for more information.

Also, Becker Community School, 9110 Hillpointe Rd., is slated to have a class 6-9 p.m. Monday July 25. For more information call 229-2482.

Completing the class will result in a two-year certification. Fee is $25 per person. Attendees must register in advance.

Man's best friend to be judged

The Lied Animal Shelter plans its third annual Best In Show event at The Orleans Arena on Sunday. Enjoy a silent auction, a gala reception brunch presented by Master Chef Gustav Mauler, and the featured event.

The Best In Show dog event will feature 50 to 60 shelter animals available for adoption after the show. Each dog will be judged by internationally known AKC registered judges. In addition, dogs already adopted from a shelter will be eligible to compete. The top four dogs from each category will then compete for the honor of being Best In Show.

Ticket prices are $10 for general admission; $5 for children 10 and under; $5 for seniors; $25 for reserved box seating, which includes admission to the VIP brunch and silent auction. Tortoise group to host guest speakers

The nonprofit Tortoise Group is offering to educate the public on exotic tortoises. The free presentation is slated for July 16 at 1 p.m. at the Nevada State Museum in Lorenzi Park.

Care varies for different kinds of tortoises, and guest speakers will provide valuable information to those who have or are considering getting a tortoise.

Bring your questions, not your tortoises. Refreshments will be served.

The City of Las Vegas hosts Another Hot Tropical Night 6-9 p.m. July 23 at the Pavilion Center Pool, 101 S. Pavilion Center Drive. The Mentalist sets stage at the Rampart

Rampart Casino presents Gerry McCambridge, the Mentalist, in a limited engagement 8 p.m. Monday through July 28 in Addison's Lounge. Admission is free and tickets can be obtained at the Rampart Rewards Center.

McCambridge is a well-known mind reader and the subject of a special airing internationally where he uses his abilities to, among other things, drive blindfolded in midtown Manhattan traffic.

Producer Bill DeLoach announces "Echoes of Woodstock," a rocking tribute to the 1969 festival, set for 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the Suncoast showroom.

The 90-minute show features songs from Janis Joplin, Jimmie Hendrix, Joe Cocker and Sly and the Family Stone, to name a few.

Celebrating Life entries due Saturday

The deadline for submitting artwork for the fifth annual Celebrating Life! Senior Art Competition and Exhibition is approaching. Entries must be delivered between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Thursday or Friday or between 10 a.m. and noon on Saturday to the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St.

The competition is open to local artists age 50 and older. No entry fee is required.
